Fall Dance Showcase November 8, 10-11

SALISBURY, MD---The premiere of six new dance works and the guest appearance by Dance magazine’s "Best Performer 2000" award winner showcases the Salisbury State University’s Dance Company 11th annual Fall Dance Showcase on Wednesday, November 8, and Friday-Saturday, November 10-11, at 8 p.m. in SSU’s Holloway Hall Auditorium.

"As always, I am so thrilled with the creative efforts of Company members who choose to choreograph new works," said Dr. Victoria Hutchinson, Dance Company director. "The audience will be pleased with the diversity of dance styles and music that will be presented," said Hutchinson.

The program features the work of two guest artists. Vanessa Jackson Johnson, choreographer and artistic director of the Urban Contemporary Dance Company in Baltimore has set, "Yo Culture," as the program’s closing work.

Patrik Bordovsky, winner of Dance magazine’s "Best Performer 2000" award performs the set "Heartbreaker."

Juniors Molly Beach and Kathryn Ferguson present "Ritmo Caliente," a jazz hip hop work set to the Latin music of Elvis Crespo and Fulanito. Created for eight dancers, the set demonstrates the high-energy and smooth movements that are characteristic of popular Latin dances.

Community member Kate Downes presents "Ambivalence," a lyrical ballet set to Celtic music of Loreena McKennitt. The dance abstractly deals with contrasting emotions related to the uncertainties faced in life.

Katie Ferguson, a junior communication arts major and dance minor, presents a fusion of jazz and hip hop dance styles for 10 dancers set to the movie theme of Mortal Kombat.

Senior Melissa Jordan, an elementary education major and dance minor, presents her second work for the Company, "Goodbye," which is set to the music of Moby. The piece features six dancers manipulating life-size stretch bags to make visually interesting shapes.

Sophomore Erin Fair Rhoades, a communication arts major and dance minor, presents a classy jazz dance for six dancers titled "Touch of Heaven." Set to the music of Richard Marx, the dance demonstrates expressive feeling and technical ability.

A work for six dancers has been choreographed by community member true-ly peaceable (correct spelling) and set to the music of Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton. Creating a vision of love, trust and healing and compassion, "One Love" is the calling of the music and the dancers and the Way.

Tickets, available at the door only, are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and teens, and free for children under 12. Reservations are not required. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. Raffle drawings will be held during each performance with proceeds to benefit the SSU Dance Company.
