Cultural Series Celebrates Eastern Europe
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates the art, music, history and culture of Europe this semester with its Eastern European Cultural Series.
A weekend of performances inaugurates the series Friday-Sunday, September 26-28, starting with the Hungarian folk group Düvό from 5-7 p.m. September 26. The group performs during an Eastern European feast at the Bistro in the Commons. Cost is $8.75 per adult, $5.20 per child 12 and under.
An exhibit of Eastern European folk costumes from the Duquesne University Tamburitzan Cultural Center opens with a reception from 6-8 p.m. that evening in the Atrium Gallery at Guerrieri University Center. The exhibit closes Friday, October 24.
The world-famous Duquesne Tamburitzans perform high-energy Eastern European folk music and dance numbers in authentic costumes 2 p.m. Sunday, September 28, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Tickets are available at the Guerrieri University Center Information Desk.
Klingon Klezmer combines traditional Jewish party music with turn-of-the-century Yiddish socialist worker songs 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, at Red Square.
The Fall International Film Series keeps the Eastern European theme alive Monday, October 20, with a screening of Yugoslavia’s Pretty Village, Pretty Flame. Other films in the series include The Bus Monday, November 17, and Ulysses’ Gaze Monday, November 24. All films are at 7 p.m. in Henson Science Hall Room 243.
The Romanian folk trio Skylark takes the stage in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 5.
Dr. John C. Tibbetts lectures on “Portraits of Music from Eastern Europe” at 7 p.m. Monday, November 10. Dr. Laurence Raw of Baskent University in Turkey lectures on “British and American Language, Literature and Culture in the Balkans” at 7 p.m. Monday, November 17. Both are in Henson Room 243.
Former SU professors Dr. Evan Kraft and Jill Benderly speak on the development of Yugoslavia at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, in the GUC Wicomico Room. Kraft is president of the Management Council for the Croatian Institute of Banking and Insurance. Benderly is co-founder and regional director of STAR Network World Learning.
The cultural series culminates with a free concert by one of Russia’s leading ensembles, the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin Moscow, at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 23, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.
