Colleges Against Cancer Hosts Candlelight Ceremony November 12

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) chapter hosts its first Lighting of Hope ceremony 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, in Red Square.

The candlelight ceremony honors those who have survived cancer, remembers those who have lost their battle, and celebrates those who are fighting back.  It features guest speakers and acoustic guitar music by sophomore Tim Lynch.

“Hope is a big theme with the American Cancer Society, mostly because it’s an optimistic outlook and it gives people the ability to hope that we will be able to find a cure,” said sophomore Lauren Friedman, co-president of CAC and co-chair of Relay.  “The ceremony is one of the many activities we have planned this year.  Others include a photography contest, smoke-free outdoor concert, and, of course, Relay for Life.”

SU students recently garnered national recognition from the ACS.  For the second consecutive year, SU was named one of only 23 “Leaders of Hope” in the nation for volunteerism and participation.  In addition, CAC won an Outstanding Advocacy Award, one of only six honors given to the more than 400 chapters nationwide, for its work with the Smoke Free Maryland initiative.  With more than $95,240.41 in donations, SU’s Relay also was named No. 3 in the nation among institutions its size for per capita fundraising.
