Belly Dancing Workshop and Performance Wednesday, May 3

SALISBURY, MD---Learn the art of belly dancing during a special workshop and performance in connection with Salisbury University’s Multicultural Festival Week starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center.

Valerie Hue, better known by her traditional Middle Eastern stage name, Nefertiti, teaches the basics of the art form, then shows how the pros do it, performing with the Salisbury-based Damali Dance Company 8:15 p.m. immediately following the lesson.

Formed in 2005, the nine-member company helps preserve the Egyptian Cabaret style of belly dancing through educational performances. Each dancer takes a traditional name-Sharvahna, Vlada, Saifa, Fayza and Camilla join Nefertiti at SU.

Nefertiti, a professional belly dancer for more than two decades, founded the company. In addition to her local work, which includes several annual eight-week courses in Maryland and Delaware, she shares the art form throughout the region with her series of Belly Dance Boot Camp workshops along the east coast.

Sponsored by the offices of Cultural Affairs, the workshop and performance at SU are free and the public is invited. Exercise clothing is recommended for those interested in participating in the workshop. For more information call 410-219-2872 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu. "
