Award-winning poet Fleda Brown to read on May 11

SALISBURY, MD---In conjunction with the annual publication of the SCARAB, Salisbury State University's student literary magazine, award-winning poet Fleda Brown (Jackson) reads from her work on Thursday, May 11, at 8 p.m. in the Montgomery Room of the Commons building on campus. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Brown's first collection of poems, Fishing With Blood(Purdue University Press, 1988) won the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. Her second collection, Do Not Peel the Birches (1993), captured Purdue University Press' Verna Emery Prize. Her latest book, The Devil's Prize, was published by Carnegie Mellon University Press in 1999.

In 1992 she collaborated with Norman Sasowsky in The Eleusinian Mysteries MS, a limited edition art book of poems and images. She also has a chapbook, The Earliest House, published in 1993 by Yarrow, a Kutztown (PA) University poetry journal. Her poems have been used as text for several prize-winning musical compositions which have been performed at Eastman School of Music and at Yale University.

Brown's Ph.D. is in American literature from the University of Arkansas. She is professor of English at the University of Delaware and directs the Graduate Student Poets in the Schools Program. Her scholarly publications include essays on William Dean Howells and Mark Twain, as well as on D. H. Lawrence and other contemporary British writers, as well as on writing and teaching poetry. She is co-editor of Critical Essays on D. H. Lawrence, published in 1988 by G. K. Hall. In addition to readings by Brown, SSU students will read from their original work.
