Juilliard Series Continues Sunday, October 17: Andre Tchekmazo, Cello and Irina Nuzova, Piano

SALISBURY, MD--Salisbury State University presents a performance by Andre Tchekmazov on cello, and Irina Nuzova on piano, Sunday, October 17, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center at 2 p.m. Part of the SSU Juilliard Series, the performance of music by Beethoven, Brahms and Debussy, is free and open to the public.

Nuzova, who made her concert debut at the age of 14 with the Omsk Symphony Orchestra, has appeared in numerous recitals in major Russian cities. Prior to moving to the United States in 1992, Nuzova studied at the Gnessin Music Institute. Currently she is enrolled in the masters program at New York's Juilliard School of Music.

In addition to solo recitals at the Steinway Society Concert Series in Princeton, NJ, and the Jersey City Public Library; her chamber music recitals include performances at the Trinity Church Noonday Concerts and Alice Tully Hall, both in New York.

Her 1998-99 concert season features a solo performance at Merkin Concert Hall, and chamber music concerts at Steinway Hall and Weill Recital Hall. She will also appear on the Arbor Chamber Music Society Concert in New Jersey.

Tchekmazov, born into a family of professional musicians, entered the Moscow Gnessin Specialized Music School at age 6 where he studied both cello and piano. After his solo debut in 1982, Tchekmazov performed with many Russian orchestras throughout Russia. Following his graduation from Gnessin in 1988, he continued his education with the Moscow Conservatory and became the principal cellist of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and a member of the Shostakovich Trio.

Following his move to the United States, Tchekmazov has participated in the Hampden-Sydney Music Festival in Virginia, and was top-prize winner in the South Orange, Metropolitan, Maplewood, Five Towns and Shadt String National competitions. At the present time he is a scholarship student at the Juilliard School.
