Heartbreak House Opens November 17 in Fulton Hall Theatre

SALISBURY, MD--George Bernard Shaw's play Heartbreak House will be presented Wednesday, November 17, through Monday, November 22, in Salisbury State University's Fulton Hall Theatre.

The play, a Bobbi Biron Theatre Program production, is a comedy about manners and attitudes that takes place in an English country house on the eve of World War I.

Director Robert Smith of the Communication Arts Department said, "Dreams, love, truth and despair collide with both comic and tragic effects" in this play.

All performances begin at 8 p.m. except for a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday, November 21. Ticket prices are $8 general admission, $6 for senior citizens and non-University students.

"The play is challenging and rewarding for the actors," Smith said. "Jokes are hidden and are in witticims not used today.

"It is not a slapstick comedy. The characters are intelligent and sophisticated, but also idle, petty and childish," Smith added.

Shaw's controversial social commentary attacked the ruling class' idleness because he believed they should have taken a leadership role prior to the war and they did not.

Gerry Patt is scenic designer. John Moller is stage manager and lighting designer, along with Brian Elligson and Cate Sheehy.

Cast members are Lisa Bourgeois, Patricia Hotchkiss, Murphy Turner, Diana Giattino, Mellanie Love, Michael Herdson, Justin Gallo, John Carlson, Chris Dochin and James Ervine.
