Election 2000: What are the Stakes/Who are the Stakeholders" Subject of October 23 Lecture

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Yvonne Scruggs-Leftwich, author, public scholar, policy analyst, community activist and spokesperson on behalf of creative Black leadership and urban politics, lectures on "Election 2000: What are the Stakes/Who are the Stakeholders?" on Monday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. at Salisbury State University in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center.

As director and chief operating officer of the Black Leadership Forum Inc., a 20-year confederation of the top national civil rights and service organizations, she facilitates dialogue among African-American leadership and designs opportunities for collaboration, across racial lines, on issues important to the community. She is also a professor of Power Politics in George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management.

Scruggs-Leftwich received a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania; a master’s degree from the Hubert H. Humphrey School of the University of Minnesota; and a bachelor’s from North Carolina Central University. She was a Fulbright Fellow to Germany.

Previously she was Deputy Mayor of Philadelphia; New York State’s Housing Commissioner; HUD’s Deputy Assistant Secretary; executive director of President Carter’s Urban and Regional Policy Group, which issued the first formal National Urban Policy two decades ago; and director of the Urban and National Policy Institutes for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in Washington. Scruggs-Leftwich co-owned several non-depository banking corporations and has served as a consulting vice president in the municipal finance field.

She has been profiled in The New York Times, The Washington Post and other publications. She is a frequent commentator on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, CNN & Co., PowerPoint and appears on many other public affairs radio and television programs.

Her lecture is sponsored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) SSU chapter, the Union of African-American Students, the Office of Multiethnic Student Services, the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) and the Guerrieri Center.
