CHAIR: Dr. Linda E. Cockey

The Music Department’s Bachelor of Arts Program, recently accredited with the National Association of Schools of Music, presents the study of music as an integral part of a liberal arts education. Working closely with other departments in the University’s nationally acclaimed Fulton School of Liberal Arts, the Music Department provides a wealth of musical opportunities for students of any major.

Along with our special commitment to interdisciplinary studies, we strive to broaden musical offerings to include opportunities to study and perform music, not only within the European Classical tradition, but also distinctively in American genres such as Jazz, rock and pop, as well as “World Music” and international folk styles.

The diversity of our course offerings is reflected in a wide range of performance opportunities open to all students regardless of competence. Membership in an ensemble is determined by audition, and ensemble scholarships are available. Ensembles regularly maintained include the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, University Chorale, Chamber Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Musical Theatre, or the community's Salisbury Chorale.

In addition to a core of full-time faculty, the Department maintains an extensive affiliate staff of teacher/performers who provide beginning-to-advanced instruction in voice and every instrument. Scholarships are available

A Message Regarding the Salisbury University Pep Band

My name is Scott Bunting and I am a music education major here at SU. Since my arrival here I have been trying to organize a pep band which is open to all SU students. In the past three years we have made many leaps and bounds in the groups abilities, equipment, uniforms, and membership.

Here is some info:

  • The Pep and Marching band will focus on playing music in the stands at all football home games.
  • We will plan, practice, and execute a field show if the interest and commitment is great enough.
  • As a group we will be acquiring more music and equipment, as well as seeking knowledgeable players to help repair and compose.
  • The ensemble will be open to all players. There will be no audition necessary.
  • We will be playing many standard songs for a football game: The "Hey Song", Iron Man, Proud Mary, and our very own SU fight song, as well as many more!
  • The typical football game is on a Saturday afternoon. Rehearsals will be scheduled based on interest and availability.
  • I always need help with administrative and equipment duties. Those with experience and leadership abilities are always needed.
  • We hope to also include a color guard with the group, but this depends on the interest for the group in general.
  • We have a Facebook group called "SU Pep and Marching Band". Please join this group if you are interested.

Please come and continue your music playing. There is a wonderful community of players seeking larger ensembles and more friends. With your help we can bring back SU's marching band from many years of hiatus.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at SB24205@students.salisbury.edu . I'm looking forward to meeting new players!
