About the Department
The Department of Information and Decision Sciences in the Perdue School of
Business offers both Information Systems (IS) and
Decision Sciences (DS) courses. “INFO” is a general
course designation for both IS and DS courses. In addition to the general IS
courses INFO 111 and 211 and DS courses INFO 281 and 326, the department offers
a host of INFO courses leading to a Major or Minor in Information Systems. These
Information Systems courses, which form options in the New “Flex” Curriculum,
include foundation courses in business information systems, applications
development, data management, system infrastructure/networks, and systems
analysis and design as well as a wide variety of specialized areas including
project management, enterprise systems, data storage technologies, Web analysis
and design, global Information Technology (IT), and business intelligence. All
students also complete an internship or practical independent project in their
field. Students in other areas of business or other university majors may also
choose to minor or double major in IS, which can increase their career options
and add value for potential employers.
What Is Information Systems?
Information
Systems is a unique, cross-disciplinary blend of technical and business skills
and knowledge that prepares graduates to solve business problems using
information technology in a variety of organizational contexts. The U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics estimates that employment of computer and IS managers is
expected to grow 16 percent over the 2006-16 decade, which is faster than the
average for all occupations. Average entry-level salaries are
approximately $50,000.
Who Are the INFO Faculty?
A key feature of the department is its faculty, who are outstanding
scholars committed to student learning. They employ a
variety of innovative classroom tools and techniques to
engage students, such as in-class small group
activities, team projects, student response systems, and
Web-based delivery of instructional materials. INFO
faculty continuously conduct professional research and
development to contribute to the state-of-the-art in
Information Systems and Decision Sciences. INFO faculty
have published research in areas such as IT strategy,
supply chain management, off-shoring, virtual teams,
project management, global IT, e-commerce and
e-government.
Who Are Information Systems Majors?
Information
Systems majors enjoy problem solving, information technologies, working with
diverse people and teams, and can look forward to a wide variety of career path
options. Graduates have gone to work in management consulting firms, IT software
and services, agribusiness, defense and government, and as staff members for a
wide variety of large and small enterprises regionally, nationally and
internationally.
