Salisbury University Relay for Life 2012
Some 95 teams representing over 1,300 students, faculty, staff, families and
community members participated in Salisbury University's 2012 Relay For Life. President
Janet Dudley-Eshbach joined student co-chairs Maggie Sullivan and Casey Gaul for
opening ceremonies.
Dudley-Eshbach spoke about her brother, who died of cancer. Guest speakers included
Maryland Senators Richard Colburn, a cancer survivor, and Jim Mathias, who celebrated
the memory of his wife, Kathy, who bravely fought breast cancer for years. Delmarva
Public Radio Interim General Manager Mike Dunn also recalled caring for his mother
when she was stricken with cancer.
"By being here tonight, in the fight against cancer, you are making sure the
people you love, your family and friends, will be here tomorrow," Mathias told the
crowd, adding for the survivors: "I thank you for being here. I thank you for your
courage."
By the next morning, supporters had raised more than $80,000 for the American
Cancer Society, pushing SU's all-time total toward $900,000.
