SU Celebrates National Campus Sustainability Day Oct. 20

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates National Campus Sustainability Day with activities including presentations, recycling opportunities and even bicycle tune-ups from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, on Red Square (update: location changed to the Wicomico Room in the Guerrieri University Center).

SU and off-campus groups including the Smart Growth Club, Horticulture and Grounds Department, Blackwell Library and Local Eastern Shore Sustainable Organic Network (LESSON) offer information on sustainable practices.

Representatives from the City of Salisbury and SU recycling departments discuss available services and efforts. The Student Government Association sponsors a CD and electronics recycling table, while students from SU’s Biology 102 Environmental Issues class host a battery recycling table.

Bike Sport is scheduled to be on hand to tune bicycles and demonstrate cycling equipment as an alternative form of transportation.

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network, in partnership with the Energy Action Coalition, presents its “Power Vote” campaign, encouraging students to vote in November’s general election with sustainable issues such as offshore wind energy in mind.

SU’s sustainability Living-Learning Community sponsors a petition drive in support of Congress’ “Frac Act,” a set of bills that would give the Environmental Protection Agency authority over the controversial “hydraulic fracturing” drilling process and require the energy industry to disclose the chemicals it uses in the process.

Beyond Red Square, the Environmental Student Association partners with Terracycle, an organization that turns trash into useful new products, to encourage students to recycle potato chip bags. Receptacles for these bags will placed at Cool Beans in the Guerrieri University Center and at all satellite dining locations. For each bag collected, Terracycle will donate 2 cents to the Wicomico Environmental Trust.

From 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Dining Services hosts a “Going Green” lunch in the Commons. The menu includes cajun pasta with scallops, lentil chili, beef fried rice, eggplant parmesan, lemon pasta, Italian spinach, cornbread, corn and edamame medley, whole wheat loaves, vegan chocolate cake with raspberry sauce and fresh fruit. Cost is $8.56, $4.41 for ages 6-11, free for children 5 and under.

Dining Services also encourages everyone to go “trayless” during meals in the dining hall that day in an effort to reduce energy, water use and food waste.

Admission to all events is free unless otherwise noted. For more information call 410-543-6030 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
