Welcome to Mathematics and Computer Science
About the Department
The Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science has adopted the
tetrahedron as a symbol representing
the different facets of the
mathematical sciences and the unity
of the whole. Majors begin their study
with a core of courses that introduce
the beauty and utility of all four areas
represented in the tetrahedron: pure
mathematics, applied mathematics,
computer science and statistics. They
routinely work in partnership with
faculty and other students to develop
as professionals and to acquire skills

“Statistics may be defined as ‘a body of
methods for making wise decisions in the face
of uncertainty.’”

W.A. Wallis | necessary to succeed in a variety of
future endeavors. We offer various
flavors of the mathematics major: a
B.S.
in mathematics; a B.S. in mathematics with a concentration in
statistics; a B.S. in mathematics with a
concentration in computer science; a B.S. in mathematics with
secondary education certification and a B.S in mathematics with an Actuarial
Science concentration.
The Statistics Concentration at
SU combines courses in mathematics
and both theoretical and applied
statistics. This program prepares
students for employment in entry-level
positions in these fields or for
graduate school in statistics.
Graduating students from this
program have gone on to work at the
Census Bureau, National Security
Agency, the IRS, Labor Bureau
as well as many industries. Others
have earned Ph.D.s in statistics
or biostatistics.
Computing Facilities

“The computer was born to solve problems
that did not exist before.”

At Salisbury University, computer
science students have access to
state-of-the-art technology. Our
department is housed primarily on
the first floor of the Henson Science
Hall, which opened in 2002. In this
facility, we have three computer
laboratories available for instruction
and research.
We have a 32-station
teaching lab that runs in a Windows
environment and is connected to the
campus network. This lab, although
used primarily for classes by our
department, is a campus lab and is
available for general use when not
reserved for a particular class. We also
have a 20-station teaching lab running
in the Linux operating environment,
used for instruction and research, and
an eight-station Linux/XP dual mode
research lab. These two labs are
under departmental control and are
open only to mathematics and
computer science students. Students
can request access using their student
ID Gull Cards as keys to these two
labs and to our student seminar room.
In addition, students with their own
laptop computers can access our
wireless “Hot Zones” throughout
the building.
Research/Internship Opportunities
 |
“Few realize that the world of modern
mathematics is rich with vivid images and
provocative ideas.’”
—
Ivars Peterson |
We sponsor a number of internships
each year where students get
first-hand experience in a business,
industry or government setting. We
also offer a variety of opportunities for
undergraduate research. SU hosts an
annual Student Research Conference
where research results are presented to
faculty and peers. We also send
students to the National Conference
on Undergraduate Research; which
SU has twice hosted.
Undergraduate Research
in Mathematics
Undergraduate research is an
emphasis in our program. Many
mathematics students choose to
engage in projects with faculty, some
of which have led to student or
student/faculty publications in
refereed journals, presentations at
professional meetings and, of course,
presentations at Salisbury University’s
own annual campus-wide Student
Research Conference. Notable
student accomplishments include a
first place award for original student
research at the spring meeting of the
MD/DC/VA Section of the MAA,
an award from Pi Mu Epsilon for
outstanding student paper
presentation at Math Fest, and two
students who were chosen from a
national pool of science and
mathematics students to present at the
CUR Poster Session on Capitol Hill.
