Exchange Visitor (J-1) Program
Introduction
The
J-1 Exchange Visitor Program
is managed by the US Department of
State. Since 1961 it has promoted mutual
understanding between the people of the United States
and the people of other countries through educational
and cultural exchanges. Institutions throughout the country are designated by
the US Department of State to sponsor J-1 Exchange
Visitors. Sponsor institutions and exchange visitors are required
to comply with the Exchange Visitor Program
regulations as set forth by the US
Department of State. Salisbury University has
been designated as a J-1 Exchange
Visitor sponsoring institution by the US
Department of State since 2009 in
the categories of Student, Short-Term Scholar, and
Professor.
Exchange Visitor
Student Program
The Student Program at Salisbury
University is designed to provide individuals from partner
schools in foreign countries the opportunity to live and study
for a short period at an American university while experiencing
American life and culture from the perspective of the Eastern
Shore of Maryland. Some Exchange Visitor
students earn degrees at Salisbury University, others study for
just a short-period as non-degree-seeking students.
Salisbury University provides opportunities for Exchange
Visitor Students to get to know the City of Salisbury and
the greater community including neighboring resort beaches, and
the natural beauty of the Eastern Shore. Moreover, the
University has abundant opportunities to expose Exchange
Visitor students to cultural
events, athletic activities, and other social opportunities to
experience American culture first hand. Of equal importance is
the opportunity for Salisbury University students to study
alongside fellow students from around the world, each with his
or her own global vision.
Exchange Visitor Short-Term Scholar Program
The Short-Term Scholar Program
at Salisbury University is designed to provide academic
colleagues from foreign countries the opportunity to live and
work for a short period of time at an American university.
Short-Term Scholars may have direct connections with American
students through their classes. Other Exchange
Visitor short-term scholars may
consult with colleagues, observe, train,
or demonstrate special skills
respective to their area of expertise. There is no minimum length of stay for an Exchange Visitor
Short-Term Scholar. The maximum length of stay is six
months. Host academic departments provide opportunities for their Short-Term Scholars
to get to know the City of Salisbury and the greater community,
including neighboring resort beaches, and the natural beauty of
the Eastern Shore. Moreover, the University has abundant
opportunities to expose Short-Term Scholars to cultural events,
athletic activities, and other social opportunities to
experience American culture first hand. Of equal importance is
the opportunity for Salisbury University students to study with
instructors from around the world.
Top
Exchange Visitor Professor Program
The Exchange Visitor Professor Program at
Salisbury University is designed to provide academic colleagues
from foreign countries the opportunity to live and work for a
longer period of time at an American university in contrast with
an Exchange Visitor
Short-Term Scholar. Minimum length of
stay for an Exchange Visitor Professor is three weeks.
Maximum length of stay is five years. Exchange Visitor
Professors may have direct connections with American students
through their classes. Other Exchange
Visitor Professors may conduct
research, observe, or consult.
Exchange Visitor Professors are NOT eligible for tenure-track
positions. Host academic departments
provide opportunities for their Exchange
Visitor Professors to get to
know the City of Salisbury and the greater community including
neighboring resort beaches, and the natural beauty of the
Eastern Shore. Moreover, the University has abundant
opportunities to expose Exchange Visitor
Professors to cultural events, athletic activities, and other
social opportunities to experience American culture first hand.
Of equal importance is the opportunity for Salisbury University
students to study with instructors from around the world.
Applying for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program at Salisbury University
Exchange Visitor Student
Students from
Salisbury University's partner universities abroad are welcome
to apply to be an Exchange Visitor Student at Salisbury
University. Availability for positions is determined by
each individual partnership agreement.
International
students who are not affiliated with one of Salisbury
University's partner universities abroad may still be eligible
to apply to be an Exchange Visitor Student at Salisbury
University.

Exchange Visitor Short-Term Scholar/Professor
Sponsoring SU
faculty members and/or academic departments can apply to the
University to host an Exchange Visitor Short-Term Scholar or
Professor. Only sponsoring SU faculty members and/or
academic departments may initiate the process to host an
Exchange Visitor Short-Term Scholar/Professor.
The basic
responsibilities and expectations for SU sponsoring faculty and
academic departments are outlined in the document,
Departmental Expectations for Hosting Exchange Visitors.
The application process begins with filing the
Application to Host Exchange
Visitor (J-1).
Additionally, the Exchange Visitor,
Scholar or Professor needs to complete the
DS-2019
Information Form, and submit it to the RO/ARO.
