This year’s 18-team field included eight automatic qualifiers as conference champions. The Sea Gulls were one of eight at-large selections.  All games in the single-elimination championship will be played on campus sites.

Salisbury State University will serve as host for this week’s NCAA Division III Field Hockey national semifinals and championship, Saturday and Sunday, November 11-12. The championship schedule is a follows:

Saturday

  2 pm               Springfield 2, Rowan 1

Sunday 
 
1 pm               National Championship Game
                         William Smith 1, Springfield 0

Tickets are $5, general admission; and $3 for students from the participating schools with a valid ID.

Salisbury State is making its fifth national semifinal appearance overall and its first since 1992. The Sea Gulls are hosting the championship for the first time.  Salisbury State has a 21-15 all-time record in NCAA Tournament competition, and won the national championship with a perfect 21-0 record in 1986.

Road to the Finals
Salisbury advanced to this week’s championship round with a pair of 1-0 wins over William Paterson and Lebanon Valley in last week’s regionals in Annville, PA.  Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Bard tallied the game-winner in Saturday’s win over Paterson, while sophomore forward Jill Cressor registered the winner in Sunday’s win over host Lebanon Valley.  Junior goalie Joanna Fenske recorded her ninth and 10th shutouts of the season in goal.

Cressor leads the Sea Gulls in scoring this season with 21 goals and 45 points. Freshman Lindsey Elliott has 12 goals and 29 points, while juniors Marie Brewington and Tara Webster have registered nine goals each.  Salisbury averages 3.05 goals per game and has outscored its opponents 61-19 on the year.

Gulls Against the Field
Salisbury is 0-2 all-time against William Smith, with the last meeting between the teams coming in the 1992 national semifinals. William Smith won that game 2-1 in overtime.  The Sea Gulls have a 13-9 series edge against Rowan. The Profs defeated the Gulls 2-1 in overtime earlier this season.  SSU and Springfield have never played.

NCAA DIVISION III FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS

National Championship Game
William Smith 1, Springfield 0

Sophomore Erin Weir scored the game’s only goal on a deflection with 10:34 remaining in the second half to lift William Smith to a 1-0 victory over Springfield in the NCAA Division III Tournament’s National Championship Game, Sunday in Salisbury, MD. Weir’s goal, her seventh of the year, redirected the shot of junior Nicky Livingston high into the cage past Springfield goalie Liz Sena.

William Smith, which finished the year 20-1 overall with a 20-match winning streak, claimed its third national championship. The Herons were also NCAA champs in 1992 and 1997. Springfield finishes 20-6 for the year and earned its first NCAA runner-up trophy.

The evenly played game remained scoreless throughout the first half and through the first 24 minutes of the second, despite a number of close scoring chances by both teams. William Smith outshot Springfield 5-2 in the first half and finished the game with a slight 11-9 advantage in total shots. The Herons also had a 5-3 edge in penalty corners in the first half, but both teams finished with 14 corners for the game.

William Smith’s Marjie MacVean finished with five saves in goal, while Springfield’s Sena had two saves in the game.

Joining Livingstone on the all-tournament team from William Smith were seniors Jess Dascano and Lauren VonBereghy. Springfield representatives on the squad were Sena, junior Caroline Black, senior Liz Kyle, and senior Abby Perham. Rounding out the 11-person team were seniors Kelly Engelbart and Moriah Holmstrom from third-place finisher Rowan, and juniors Kristen Seaton and Tara Webster from third-place Salisbury State.

National Semifinal Game #1
William Smith 3, Salisbury State 1

Junior forward Jackie Hall scored two goals, both in the second half, to lead #1 ranked William Smith to its 19th straight victory, 3-1 over #3 Salisbury State in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Saturday. William Smith (19-1) advances to the national championship game for the third time in four years. Salisbury, making its first semifinal appearance since 1992, finishes its season with a 17-4 record.

Senior Lauren vonBereghy opened the scoring for William Smith just 1:46 into the contest, scoring her 18th goal of the season to give the Herons an early 1-0 advantage. The lead remained intact through the first half.

Hall extended the lead to 2-0 with 25:31 left in the second half with her first marker. Salisbury then cut the margin in half on junior forward Tara Webster’s 10th goal of the season with 16:46 remaining. Hall then added an insurance goal for William Smith, her team-leading 20th of the year, at the 8:11 mark on a penalty stroke.

Salisbury finished with a 13-10 edge in shots and a 12-9 advantage in penalty corners. William Smith goalie Marjie MacVean finished with two saves, while Salisbury’s Joanna Fenske recorded four saves.

William Smith faces the winner of Saturday’s second semifinal between #2 Rowan and #4 Springfield in Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship game.

National Semifinal Game #2
Springfield 2, Rowan 1

Senior Abby Perham scored the game-winning goal with 26:56 remaining in the second half to lead #4 Springfield past #2 Rowan 2-1 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Saturday. Springfield (20-5), making its third NCAA Tournament appearance, advances to the national championship game for the first time. Rowan, which entered the match with a 12-game winning streak, finishes its season with a 17-2 record.

Junior Melissa Rogers gave Springfield the first half lead, scoring her team-leading 15th goal of the year, unassisted, with 17:48 left before halftime. Rowan tied the score a little over six minutes later on a goal by senior Michele Bilbow at 11:28, assisted by Kelly Engelbart.

The game remained deadlocked until early in the second when Perham tallied the eventual game winner. Rowan finished with a 16-8 edge in shots and a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners. Goalie Liz Sena finished with eight saves for Springfield, while Rowan’s Lesley Snock had three saves.

Springfield faces William Smith in Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship game. William Smith defeated host Salisbury 3-1 in the first semifinal match.
