Social Work Students In Action
As part of their final project in Dr. Jennifer Jewell's section of SOWK 410: Practice III, students organized three Know Your Rights trainings, partnering with the SU chapter of NAACP, the HALO Center, and the Seton Center in Princess Anne. The trainings were facilitated by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). After final count, nearly 150 SU students and community members were trained on their rights when encountering the police. Social Work Practice III Students Present Comfort Bags to Interfaith Shelter
Students in Kathleen Arban's Practice III class at the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center presented comfort bags filled by donations received from local businesses. The bags were gender and age specific consisting of perishable and nonperishable items. Multiple community members and stakeholders took part in this event, offering suport and donations as well as ways in which they could contribute to the problem-solving process. Social Work Student Honored with Diversity Award
Salisbury University recently honored seven members of the campus community with its 2015 President's Diversity Awards including Social Work's own, Briana DeNeal-Findley!
DeNeal-Findley is the founder of WINK, a student organization dedicated to female empowerment and programs that promote the success of women of all races on campus and in the community. She has served on SU’s Women’s History Month committee, and worked with Multicultural Student Services as a Powerful Connections mentee and mentor, and as a student organizer for its annual leadership summit and senior banquet. As a graduate assistant in the Student Activities Office, she has continued her efforts to provide “a great student life experience for all,” Benjamin said.

Social work is a profession devoted to helping people function the best they can in their environment. Social workers are people who care about peoplewho want to make a difference. The Social Work Department began in 1974 to serve the needs of Maryland and the neighboring states, and since then it has grown to include the dual-degree program with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1990 and a new Master of Social Work Program launched in 2001. In 2006, the Department expanded to include satellite programs at Cecil College Northeast campus, the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center at Chesapeake College, and the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown and in 2013 to the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center in California, Maryland. All of SU's undergraduate and graduate social work programs are fully accredited by the Council of Social Work Education, a must for earning licensure.
The Social Work Department at Salisbury University is dedicated to excellence in the education of professional social workers at the baccalaureate and masters level.Both programs are committed to student-centeredness and active community engagement in the pursuit of social and economic justice.Therefore, the mission of the department is to prepare competent social work professionals for beginning level generalist and advanced direct practice with individuals, families, and groups.In addition, the program will provide regional leadership in the provision of professional development, service, consultation, and research to advance the well-being of the region served and will contribute to the expansion of social work knowledge.
