CMS FAQs

Below are frequently asked questions regarding the new website Content Management System (Cascade Server). If your question is not here, please visit our website work request system and ask your question there. Thank you.

General CMS Questions

These are general CMS questions regarding overall purpose and use of the system.
1.

What is a CMS?

A content management system, or CMS, is a web application designed to make it easier for non-technical users to add, edit and manage a website.

Not only do content management systems help website users with content editing, they also take care of a lot of "behind the scenes" work such as: making content searchable and able to be indexed, keeping track of users, permissions and security settings, maintain site look-and-feel and branding consistency, and much more.

Our system is called Cascade Server.

2.

What is our Web Content Management System (CMS) and how do I gain access and use it to edit my site?

Our CMS is called Cascade Server. To gain access to edit your site, follow these steps:

  1. Login to our web work request system: https://webapps.salisbury.edu/webrequest/ with your SU username and password.
  2. Select “User Access” for the Request Type.
  3. Complete the rest of the Web Request form and click Submit at the bottom.
  4. We will contact you and schedule training when the request has been processed.
3.

Why do we have this new system?

A new system is necessary due to three issues:

  1. Security audits require that we upgrade the servers we use to host our website;
  2. The technology that supports and allows the use of Front Page, SharePoint Designer 2007, and Expression Web to manage websites has reached its end-of-life and is no longer available on the updated servers;
  3. Our growth as an institution has made a more comprehensive and systematically managed approach necessary;
4.

Why don't I see the updated document that I uploaded to my site?

Your browser's cache probably needs to be cleared before it will attempt to download the new version of your document. For information about your browser cache and how to clear it in most different browsers, please visit http://refreshyourcache.com/en/home/

SU faculty and staff specific questions

1.

Can I move my faculty so that it is managed in Cascade CMS?

Yes. please submit your request via our website work request site.

2.

What SU websites are affected?

Only sites and pages on http://www.salisbury.edu (main web server) are affected.

Websites NOT affected are:

- faculty.salisbury.edu
- staff.salisbury.edu
- students.salisbury.edu
- www2.salisbury.edu
- secureweb.salisbury.edu

If you are unsure, please submit your question via our website work request site.

3.

Will the new CMS be Section 508 compliant?

Yes.

4.

Will the Faculty FP (facultyfp.salisbiry.edu/username) site be impacted?

Yes. The FP in "Faculty FP" refers to Microsoft "Front Page" and the Front Page Server Extensions which allowed editors to access web pages on the server directly. This software has been phased out by Microsoft and is no longer be available to us. It is for this reason that we are implementing a new system for managing our many web sites. Faculty FP pages will need to be migrated to the new system.
