Mr. Marvin Pyles was named Vice President of Administration and Finance at Salisbury University in July 2017, after holding the position in an interim capacity since January 2016. Known as a transformative and innovative leader, Pyles is a high-energy, “go to” executive who uses a collaborative approach to serve the campus. Pyles’ primary focus for the Division of Administration and Finance is to provide support to the campus community - students, faculty and staff - through improved customer service, efficient operations, and strategic planning.
Pyles started his career working with two of the “Big 3” consulting firms, providing services to a number of private Fortune 500 companies and large public (Federal, State and Local) organizations. As a management consultant, he developed expertise and knowledge in a broad variety of operational and administrative functions, including Retail Operations, Project Management, Information Technology, Organizational Development, Human Resources, and Finance/Budget Management.
In 1995 he transitioned to higher education, landing at the University of Maryland College Park as the Assistant Director of Human Resources. Marvin continued to provide OD consulting services to the campus in a variety of key functions, including talent management, and employee & labor relations. In 2008, Pyles came to Salisbury University to serve as the Associate Vice President of Administration and Finance and Chief Human Resources Officer overseeing HR, Sustainability and Safety, the Office of Institutional Equity, and Diversity. In 2013 he became the Associate Vice President of Administration and Chief Human Resources Officer at the University of Central Florida, the second largest institution in the nation.
Pyles has been lauded for his leadership in introducing and executing organizational change efforts and his creative problem-solving to address the university’s evolving direction. He co-chairs the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Committee and plays a significant role in a variety of other university initiatives.
In the greater community, he has been actively involved with the Special Olympics, the deaf community, the Boy Scouts of America, and coaching kids and running youth sports leagues. He enjoys reading, fitness, traveling, and is an avowed film buff, relishing in all movies ranging from arthouse and foreign cinema to blockbuster films.
Pyles holds a Bachelor’s degree and Master of Arts degree from the University of Maryland College Park and he is currently ABD in the Organizational Leadership Doctoral program at UMES. He lives in Berlin, MD with his wife Debbie and three children, two of which are proud SU graduates.
