In recognition of outstanding public service, the award was presented by SU President Janet Dudley-Eshbach during a ceremony at the Miller West Conference Center in Annapolis.

“Senator King has spent her career advocating for education at all levels, from K-12 to universities,” Dudley-Eshbach said. “In addition, she understands the important role that technology plays in education and in our lives, and how it will continue to do so into the future. Her efforts have been recognized by the Maryland Association of Boards of Education, and the University is grateful for her work in the legislature on behalf of students, families and institutions such as ours.”

A representative of Montgomery County, King joined the Senate in 2007. Currently, she serves on the Budget and Taxation Committee; chairs the Education, Business and Administration Subcommittee; and is Senate chair of the Joint Committee on Children, Youth and Families. She has been part of the P-20 Leadership Council of Maryland, State Early Childhood Education Advisory Council, Maryland Education Council, and Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education.

Before the Senate, King served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2003-2007. A member of the Ways and Means Committee, she chaired its Education Subcommittee and was House chair of the Joint Committee on Children, Youth and Families. She also co-chaired a school safety task force.

Prior to her legislative career, King was president of Montgomery County’s Board of Education and Council of Parent-Teacher Associations, and vice president of Trecor, Inc., a family-owned consulting and forensic engineering company. She has served on boards for Montgomery’s Primary Care Coalition and the Lourie Center for Children.

An active Senate leader, King earned its First Citizen award in 2017. In 2014, the Daily Record named her one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women. She also has been honored by the National Biotechnology Industry Organization and Tech Council of Maryland.

King is the 17th recipient of the Hargreaves Fellowship. Past honorees include Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller and J. Lowell Stoltzfus, Brian Frosh, Rob Garagiola, Thomas “Mac” Middleton, George Edwards and Ed Kasemeyer for their service as senators; as well as House Speaker Michael Busch and John Bohanan, Talmadge Branch, Addie Eckhardt, Sheila Hixson, Tawanna Gaines, Adrienne Jones, Norman Conway and the late Howard “Pete” Rawlings for their service as delegates.
