Homecoming Weekend and Family Day Packed With Fun
SALISBURY, MD---From a block party and parade to athletics and reunions, Salisbury University’s 2004 Homecoming Weekend and Family Day are packed with excitement for families, students and alumni alike. Homecoming events begin Friday, October 15. Daytime highlights include a four-person scramble golf tournament at 2 p.m. at Wood Creek Golf Links, a powderpuff football game sponsored by the Residence Hall Association a student barbecue sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA), both from 3-7 p.m. on Holloway Hall Lawn. The SU Athletics Hall of Fame inducts four new members during its annual banquet (6 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center). They are: All-American lacrosse midfielder, two-time team MVP, North-South All-Star and National Maryland State Lacrosse Hall-of-Famer Glen E. Norris (1981); All-America track and field honoree and school heptathlon and shot put record-holder Cindy L. Daugherty (1985); all-time basketball scoring and rebounding champion and 1989 national rebound record-holder Dawn Webb Bracley (1990); and three-time lacrosse All-American, team MVP and North-South All-Star Kevin J. Hohner (1992). Activities continue at 7 p.m. in Caruthers Hall Auditorium with a free showing of Shrek 2, sponsored by the Student Office for Activity Planning (SOAP). History professor Wayne Ackerson hosts an eclectic coffeehouse talent night with special guest Trisha Benton from 7-9 p.m. in the Gull’s Nest at the Guerrieri Center. Those with a more adventurous side may check out a presentation by long-distance hiker and author Cindy Ross at 7:30 p.m. in Fulton Hall Room 111. Friday events conclude with the Bobbi Biron Theatre Program’s presentation of the British sitcom farce Noises Off 8 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre, directed by Dr. T. Paul Pfeiffer, director of SU Theatre. Tickets are $12, $10 for non-SU students and seniors. SU ID holders receive one ticket free. The performance is not recommended for young children. Saturday is Family Day, and parents of new students can see slides of what their children accomplished during this summer’s New Student Seminar Outdoor Program from 10-11 a.m. in the Wicomico and Nanticoke rooms of the Guerrieri Center. The Baltimore Westsiders Marching Band joins local high school bands, homecoming court and students organizations during this year’s Homecoming and Family Parade 10:15 a.m. rain or shine. The parade begins at St. Martin’s Hall and continues through campus toward Sea Gull Stadium. President Janet Dudley-Eshbach invites families and alumni to join her during a gourmet brunch at 11 a.m. in the Gull’s Nest. The menu includes made-to-order omelets, Belgium waffles, fresh fruit and pastries. Pre-registration is required. Admission is $15 for adults, $7.50 for children 6-11. The SGA hosts a Homecoming Block Party noon-4 p.m. on Wayne Street and the Intramural Fields. The community is invited to enjoy games and other activities, as well as inflatables provided by SOAP. The Sea Gulls take on Kean University of New Jersey during this year’s Homecoming football game at 1 p.m. Admission is $4, $2 for non-SU students, $1 for children 12 and under. SU ID holders receive one ticket free. Alumni have the chance to rekindle old friendships during reunions at various locations on and off campus from 4:30-9 p.m. Meanwhile, diners have the opportunity to taste the best of what SU students’ families have to offer during the second annual Recipes From Home Dinner 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Bistro and Rotunda of the Commons. Dining Services staff prepare dishes based on recipes submitted by students while the community enjoys musical entertainment, face painting and temporary tattoos. Admission is $8.95, $5.50 for children 6-12, free for children 5 and under. Families and alumni have the chance to catch another showing of Shrek 2 at 7 p.m. at Noises Off at 8 p.m., while Hypnotist Michael Anthony entertains audiences at 8:30 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Admission to Homecoming and Family Day events is free unless otherwise noted. Special invitations are required to participate in some reunion events.
