Human Geography Track

About the Program

Human geography is an exciting specialization that is all about understanding and making an impact on the world around us. What makes us different, and what makes us the same? How do people around the world work, live, eat, travel and play? What is behind the headlines of international conflicts? How can we improve the quality of life in cities and promote sustainable living?  By studying human geography at Salisbury University, you can answer these questions and more – and truly make a difference in our communities, from the local level to the global scale.

Because of the unique spatial outlook and skills you learn in SU’s human geography program – including mapping, spatial analysis and qualitative analyses – you could get a job with any of the following:

  • Conservation organizations
  • Human rights groups
  • Mapping and GIS firms
  • Museum curators, archivists and historical preservation
  • Park rangers
  • Real estate
  • U.S. Census Bureau and other government agencies
  • Urban planning

The geography faculty at SU are consistently overwhelmed by the number of companies attempting to hire our graduates, often before they have finished their academic programs!  Many of our alumni also take these jobs after completing a course of study at some of the world’s most prestigious graduate schools, including East Carolina University, University of Tennessee, University of Alabama and Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. Recent employers of SU geography majors include:

  • Booz Allen and other defense and GIS contractors
  • Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
  • Department of Comprehensive Planning, Worcester County, Maryland
  • Department of Homeland Security
  • Maryland Department of Natural Resources
  • Maryland Department of Planning
  • National Geospatial Agency
  • Office of Information Technology, Baltimore County, Maryland
  • Richland County (SC) GIS Department
  • S. Department of Commerce (Bureau of the Census)
Many geography majors at SU select the human geography track. Many also complement their education with SU’s geographic information science (GIS) track.
