» The Danger of a Single Story

Using Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's powerful 2009 TED Talk, Mark D'Angelo, SU's D&I Specialist will facilitate a workshop around how socially constructed narratives are used to frame socially constructed identities--serving to privilege and empower some, while oppressing and disempowering others. How can we interrupt this problematic cycle of socialization to make our campus spaces more inclusive and welcoming for all identities? What can we do in our own capacities to avoid perpetuating oppressive stereotypes, insecurities, fears, and misconceptions around identities that we don't personally carry? Join us to engage together using our collective experiences, identities, and expertise to begin this dialogue as an inclusive community!

This free workshop, sponsored by the Office of Institutional Equity, is open to students, faculty, and staff. A free hot breakfast will be provided to those in attendance. For more information, please contact Mark D’Angelo mldangelo@salisbury.edu 410-677-6772.
