Program Information

ShoreCorps/PALS, the AmeriCorps program at Salisbury University, is seeking competent and energetic individuals who want to join the national service movement by serving youth and/or senior citizens on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  ShoreCorps/PALS has partnered with over twenty agencies over the years, and our members have served in Somerset, Wicomico, Worcester, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Talbot, and Queen Anne’s Counties. 

AmeriCorps members with ShoreCorps/PALS serve for at least 48 weeks in positions providing one-on-one and group mentoring, homework assistance, parent and family support services, health education programs, a variety of community outreach activities and volunteer recruitment and management. 

ShoreCorps/PALS is an AmeriCorps State Program, working under the oversight of the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism (GOSV) in Maryland. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) oversees AmeriCorps Programs across the country.

Member Opportunities

Requirements

  • Applicants must have a strong interest in serving youth and adolescents or senior adults for a full year.
  • Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must have reliable transportation.
  • Full-time and Half-time applicants must be available to attend the tuition-free, mandatory AmeriCorps member class at Salisbury University on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. during the Fall and Spring semesters. Minimum-time applicants are not required to attend. 
  • Applicants must be able to provide documentation that they are “citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States.”  To document this status, a US birth certificate or US passport is required
  • Applicants DO NOT need to be college students, anyone from the community who fits the above requirements may participate. 

Benefits

full-time, one-year commitment of 1700 hours of service (approximately 40 hours per week during 48 weeks of active service) offers the following benefits:

  • Bi-weekly living allowance of approximately $526.25 (during 48 weeks of active service)
  • Health Insurance plan available, if eligible
  • Post-education award of $5,815 to help pay for federal student loans and/or future educational expenses. Members who are age 55 or older may gift their ed. award to a child or grandchild.
  • Child care reimbursements, if eligible
  • Six tuition-free undergraduate credits from Salisbury University
  • Federal student loan forbearance
  • Federal student loan accrued interest payments

half-time, one-year commitment of 900 hours of service (approximately 20 hours per week during 48 weeks of active service) offers the following benefits:

  • Bi-weekly living allowance of approximately $252.08 (during 48 weeks of active service)
  • Post-education award of $2,907 to help pay for federal student loans and/or future educational expenses. Members who are age 55 or older may gift their ed. award to a child or grandchild.
  • Six tuition-free undergraduate credits from Salisbury University
  • Federal student loan forbearance
  • Federal student loan accrued interest payments

A quarter-time, one year commitment of 450 hours of service (approximately 10 hours/week for appx. 48 weeks) offers the following benefits:

  • Bi-weekly, pre-tax living allowance of $93.75
  • Post-education award of $1,538 to help pay for federal student loans and/or future education expenses.
  • Four tuition-free undergraduate credits from Salisbury University
  • Federal student loan forbearance during service
  • Exemption from paying some or all of federal student loan accrued interest payments

minimum-time, commitment of 300 hours of service offers the following benefits:

  • Post-education award of $1,230 to help pay for federal student loans and/or future educational expenses. Members who are age 55 or older may gift their ed. award to a child or grandchild.
  • Federal student loan forbearance
  • Federal student loan accrued interest payments

The Process

  • Fill out an application and mail, email, or return in person to our office. Map
  • Our staff will review your application and email you with any questions.
  • We send your application out to sites based on the interests and geographic locations you indicated on your application. You'll be notified via email when your application has been sent to a site.
  • It is then up to the sites to contact you for an interview.
  • Once you are selected by a site and commit to completing 1700, 900, or 300 hours at your site by August 14, 2018 you can become a member assuming acceptable criminal background results. 
  • New members start on a rolling basis no sooner than August 15th 2017. 

All member service positions are dependent upon receipt of grant award.
