The Leadership Academy builds teamwork and leadership skills through instructional sessions on culture, music, religion, gender and the economy. The program encourages youth to assume leadership positions in the community. Programs are for rising high school students grades 9-12.

Online Outdoor Leadership: Wilderness Emergency Care
Audience: Students entering grades 9-12
Dates: Monday August 3 through Friday August 14
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
About The Course
The Online Wilderness Emergency Care introduces the principles of first aid in wilderness settings, including patient or sub-assessment and care for open wounds, infection, fractures, dislocations, and other life-threatening conditions. Study of strategies for providing care in inclement weather and with alternative standard equipment. Special focus is placed upon evacuation techniques as well as best practices for monitoring and documenting patient status.
Students will meet on Zoom for two weeks, Monday - Friday,10:00 - 11:00 AM and complete the related module and quiz prior to the following Zoom meeting.
A separate follow-up certification class will be available when face-to-face Covid-19 restrictions are lifted for those who are 16 years and older.
Instructor Christy Harper
Christy Harper, originally from Florida, came to Salisbury University after twenty years of varied experience in Outdoor Education Leadership. She has facilitated corporate ropes adventures, low-ropes teambuilding, summer camps, senior education programs, high adventure trips, water sports, backcountry hiking and much more. Her scholarship focuses on the intersection of wilderness, individual identity and responsibility, community building, and leadership development. Community service and environmental stewardship are touchstones. Since 2006, she has been redeveloping program curriculum, expanding course offerings, and cultivating local partners to ensure her students’ time in and out of the classroom result in exceptional adventures in education.
