COVID-19 Precautions Continue for Fall

Freshmen FAQ

Question:

I'm an incoming freshman for the 2021 fall semester at Salisbury University, planning to major in computer science. In short, I've been planning to buy a new laptop as I move into college. I would like to know if the one I pick out will be able to handle the coursework.https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lenovo-Legion-5-Gaming-Laptop-15-6-Intel-Core-i7-10750H-8GB-1TB-HDD-256GB-SSD-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1650-Windows-10-Home-Phantom-Black-15IMH05/866147187

Answer:

Hi Shannon,

I just got your message from Kim asking about a laptop for your coursework at SU. I'm glad you've decided to join us in the fall!

As for the laptop selection, it does seem reasonable for what you'll need. There are a lot of different scenarios for each class, but we use widely accessible software, and you'll also have access to the labs for any specialized hardware needs in advanced courses or independent work. One thing you'll eventually do in your courses is work with the Linux operating system, which you can use through a virtual machine or the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), both of which look supported on that laptop. So, overall, it looks like a solid choice that will serve you well.

Feel free to reach out with other questions, and we look forward to meeting you next semester!
