Grading Rubric

Content: 50%

(The information in the newsletter must be very and relevant for the grade level and context in which it was produced. The intended audience of parents should be clear.)

A

40-50

Excellent content. One side of the newsletter clearly informs parents of upcoming events and content being covered in the classroom. The other side of the newsletter clearly explains what strategies are, details one strategy clearly and fully, explains why to use it when reading, and explains in a step-by-step process how to do it. An example that uses a child’s text also reinforces how this process is done and why. Appropriateness of the strategy for the grade level written is also essential. All elements of the newsletter are up to “A” standard.

B

30-40

Good content. One side of the newsletter informs parents of upcoming events and content being covered in the classroom. The other side of the newspaper explains what strategies are, explains one strategy and why to use it, and and explains in a step-by-step process how to do it. An example that uses a child’s text also reinforces how this process is done and why. Appropriateness of the strategy for the grade level written is also essential. While all of these components are present they are not as clearly and fully developed as in an “A” newsletter. One component falls below the “A” standard.

C

20-30

Okay content. All components of the newsletter are present but not well developed and the audience is not clear in the writing. The writing may lack specificity.

D

10-20

Problematic content. One of the components falls below the “C” standard.

Design 30%

(Is the newsletter reader friendly? Is it easy to read and understand? Is the information presented in short paragraphs, bulleted lists or in a time frame?)

A

27-30

Excellent design. Excellent headings and subheadings, very visually appealing document design, short paragraphs, lists or clear time frames make information more understandable.

B

C

21-24

Okay design. Headings are okay. Document design is okay. Paragraphs, lists or time frames are acceptable.

D

18-21

Design problems. May lack headings, sub headings, visual appeal, paragraphs that are too brief or too long, lists and time frames not clear or evident.
