CONSTITUTION
Of the Salisbury University Student Alumni Council
Article I
Mission
Section I. The organization shall be called the Salisbury University Student Alumni Council.
Section II. The mission of the Salisbury University Student Alumni Council is to promote the interests and goals of the Salisbury University Alumni Association while encouraging student involvement and dedication to the University.
Article II
Membership
Section I. The membership is comprised of Salisbury University students in good standing with the University. Members are elected to membership by a selection process consisting of an application and interview conducted by the New Member Chair, President, Vice-President, and other members appointed by the Executive Council. The number of members selected to the Council each year shall be determined by the President and/or Advisors.
Section II. Active members shall have one vote in all meetings of the council in which they are present. The President shall not have a vote in the council or on the executive board except in the case of a tie, or if the voting is done by secret ballot.
Section III. Active members are required to:
1. Attend all scheduled meetings of the council, unless excused by the secretary before the meeting (this includes weekly council meetings, retreats, and all SAC-sponsored events).
a. Classes, lab, sickness, family tragedy, or required organization or sporting events are excusable reasons for tardiness or absence, at the discretion of the secretary.
b. All excuses are to be communicated to the secretary before the beginning of the meeting in question.
c. One unexcused absence per term is acceptable, with dismissal from the council effective after two unexcused absences within the same term.
d. Two tardies in any given term shall constitute one unexcused absence.
2. Be a member of at least one committee and attend all meetings of that committee.
3. Participate in events sponsored by the Alumni Association or Advancement as they arise throughout the year.
4. Participate in regional and national conferences if applicable.
Article III
Officers
Section I. The officers shall be President, Vice-President, and Secretary. They, along with the committee chairs, shall be the Executive Board of the organization serving with the Advisors.
Section II. Officers shall be elected annually in November and take office during the first meeting of Spring Semester. Only SAC members with a GPA higher than 2.0 may run for executive office. Should an officer vacate his office mid-term, an election will be held at the following council meeting and a replacement shall be determined. Should the President vacate his office, the Vice-President will become president and a new election will be held for the office of Vice-President. All elections shall be done by secret ballot.
Section III. Duties of Officers:
The President shall:
1. Preside over all meetings of the council.
2. Serve as the liaison between SAC and the Alumni Board.
3. Serve as the chief spokesperson for SAC on the campus.
4. Serve as a non-voting member of all committees.
5. Appoint and oversee all ad hoc committees.
6. Be responsible for all activities and meetings of the council.
7. Chair the Executive Board.
The Vice-President shall:
1. Oversee all committee structure.
2. Preside in the absence of the President.
3. Secure a meeting location for weekly council meetings.
4. Organize the yearly calendar.
5. Be responsible for registration for all regional and national conferences.
6. Be responsible for maintaining the budget of the council with SGA.
7. Keep accurate financial records of all events and expenditures.
8. Manage SU Fund and other donations.
The Secretary shall:
1. Be responsible for the attendance policy as outlined in Article II.
2. Take minutes at all meetings of the council.
3. Distribute information to the council.
4. Attend to all the correspondence of the council.
6. Preside in the absence of the President and Vice-President.
Article IV
Committees
Section I. The standing committees within SAC shall be Fundraising, Marketing/Publicity, Social, New Member, Programming, and Alumni Relations. The chairmen or co-chairmen of these committees shall be appointed by the President with help of the other officers and approved by a majority vote of the council.
Section II. Responsibilities of Committees:
The Fundraising Committee shall:
1. Be responsible for freshman and senior class pictures.
2. Be responsible for organizing the making and distribution of Welcome Kits for the freshmen.
3. Be responsible for any additional fundraising activities that should arise during the year.
The Marketing/Publicity Committee shall:
1. Be responsible for publicizing any event that SAC sponsors.
2. Work closely with Homecoming chair to perform publicity tasks as needed.
3. Perform other necessary tasks for University relations.
The Social Committee shall:
1. Be responsible for planning the new member part along with the New Member Chair, the end of the year banquet, and the retreats of the council.
2. Provide opportunities for SAC members to interact outside of meetings.
3. Keep the scrapbook and history of SAC.
4. Take pictures at all official SAC events.
The New Member Committee shall:
1. Be responsible for presenting SAC at all activities fairs.
2. Oversee the selection of new members along with the President, Vice-President, and any additional members appointed by the Executive Council.
3. Instruct new members in the workings of the council. This includes but is not limited to introductions to the members of the council, the purpose of the council, and the constitution of the council.
4. Plan and facilitate a new member party with the social committee.
The Programming Committee shall:
1. Be responsible for programming of all non-Homecoming events including, but not limited to, canned food drive, study break, etc.
2. Work with the council to initiate new programs.
3. Provide the University with resources for various Salisbury-sponsored events.
The Alumni Relations Committee shall:
1. Maintain a working relationship with a variety of alumni in order to stage events for interaction between alumni, the council, and the greater Salisbury community.
2. Be responsible for sending delegates to Alumni Board events.
3. Work as a liaison between the Alumni Board and SAC.
Section III. At his or her discretion, the President should normally appoint members of the council to oversee and organize the Homecoming festivities annually. This and other ad hoc committees shall oversee the events for their respective weeks and delegate authority to the standing committees for various responsibilities for those weeks.
Article V
Meetings
Section I. The order of meetings shall be:
1. Call to Order by the President
2. Roll Call by the Secretary
3. Approval of Minutes
4. Officer Reports in Ranking Order
5. Committee Reports at the Discretion of the President
6. Business of the Council
7. General Announcements of the Council
8. Adjournment
Section II. All Committee Meetings shall occur directly following the meetings of the council or at other times as appointed by the chair of each committee or the executive board.
Article VI
Amendments
Section I. This constitution may be revised or amended by a two-thirds majority vote of the council.
