Dr. Victoria V. Hutchinson

Victoria Hutchinson PhotoDr. Hutchinson (1990) is Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Salisbury University. A recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award, she developed and directs the Dance Program, coordinates the Dance Minor, and teaches courses in Creative Modern Dance, Dance Appreciation, Dance Teaching, and Yoga. 

Hutchinson holds an Ed.D. in Dance from Temple University (Russell Conwell Fellow), an M.A. in Choreography from the University of Arizona, and a B.F.A. magna cum laude in Modern Dance Performance from the University of Utah; and, certifications in Laban Movement Analysis from the Laban/Bartenieff Movement Institute, Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training, and The Foundations of Distance Education from the University of Maryland University College. Her scholarship training included studies with the Repertory Dance Theatre of Utah, the Martha Graham Contemporary School of Dance in London and New York City, and Kathak dance with Guru Pandit Durgalal in India. Her professional credits include principal dancer with the Arizona Opera, dancer/actress in Aristophanes’ The Clouds at Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC, and member of the Dance Process/Dance Company of Baltimore. She has appeared as a soloist or dancer in the works of Nolan Dennett, Jan Erkert, Bill Evans, Annabelle Gamson, Loabelle Mangelson, Jennifer Mueller, Ririe-Woodbury, and John M. Wilson.

 

Victoria has choreographed more than 50 works for concert dance, musical theatre, theatre, opera, and collaborations with solo musicians, choral groups, and percussion ensembles. She is acclaimed for her copyrighted reconstruction of Mary Wigman's 1926 Hexentanz and known for her research on the Cherokee Booger Dance and dance applications for online learning and distance education. Her record as an artist-educator includes a Council for the International Exchange of Scholars Indo-American Fellowship, a University of Arizona "Creative Achievement Award," an Illinois Arts Council Choreography Fellowship, a Kennedy Center for the Arts "Performance Excellence Award," and a National Dance Association "Graduate Student Literary Award." First named to Who's Who Among American Teachers in 2004, Hutchinson has published in Impulse: The International Journal of Dance Science, Medicine, and Education and The Journal of Interactive Instruction Development; reviewed for The Dance Research Journal, and presented at AAHPERD, DACI, Dancing in the Millennium, EDUCAUSE, and NDEO conferences. She has served on the American College Dance Festival Association's national board of directors, the Maryland State Arts Council dance panel, the Salisbury-Wicomico Arts Council, and was a founding member of the Eastern Shore Ballet Theatre board of directors. Her professional memberships include the National Dance Association and the National Dance Education Organization.

 

Prior to Salisbury University, Hutchinson held teaching and administrative positions at Eastern Illinois University.
