RESNET (Residence Network Services)

RESNET is provided to all students living in a residence hall at Salisbury University and to those who reside at University Park 1 and 2 (off-campus apartment complex).  This service allows you to connect your personal computer directly to the campus network and the Internet.  RESNET does not require a modem (dial-up, cable) for connection, but it does require a network/Ethernet card (10/100T), which can be purchased at the University Bookstore.   To report any problems with your Internet connection, call the RESNET/Helpdesk Hotline, x75454 (on-campus) or 410-677-5454 (off-campus).

RESNET Connections

Each room is equipped with a "Port for Every Pillow", which means that each occupant can have their very own computer connection.  Network connections are available in the following areas:

Chesapeake Hall (CP) Chester Hall (CR) Choptank Hall (CK)
Dogwood Village (DV) Manokin Hall (MK) Nanticoke Hall (NA)
Pocomoke Hall (PO) Severn Hall (SV) St. Martin Hall (SM)
Wicomico Hall (WI) University Park (UPK) University Park 2 (UPK2)

This network connection gives you direct access to the Internet from your personal computer.  With it, you can use World Wide Web browsers such as Netscape and Internet Explorer, GroupWise electronic email, as well as Telnet and FTP (File Transfer Protocol).  RESNET does not require the use of a modem, so it is much faster and also frees up your telephone while you are connected to the network.

RESNET is included in your housing services, so there is no monthly fee for access.  Once your computer is setup, simply plug it into the data port (usually blue in color) in your room.  You will immediately be prompted to register your computer using our Campus Manager System.  You will still need to purchase or ensure that you have a network/Ethernet card in order to connect to our campus network.  A network kit is available in the University Bookstore.  Contact them at x36085 (on-campus) or 410-543-6085 (off-campus) for more information.

Support for RESNET is split between the University Bookstore staff and the Information Technology staff.  IT maintains the network; the Bookstore can assist you in maintaining your computer.  If your problem is network related, contact x75454 (on-campus) or 410-677-5454 (off-campus).  If your problem is hardware/computer related, contact x36085 (on-campus) or 410-543-6085 (off-campus).

RESNET Network Setup

Effective August 1, 2005, RESNET will not support Windows 95, 98, ME or 2000.  If you plan to live on-campus or at University Park (1 and 2) and have a Windows-based PC, your PC must have Windows XP.  This requirement does not effect Mac/Apple or Linux users.  For more information about our latest requirements, click here.

RESNET-WIRELESS Connections

Salisbury University provides wireless access to all SU faculty, staff and students in certain public areas.  The wireless network allows users to have direct access to the Internet using a laptop or other Internet-ready wireless device.  Faculty and staff who have Novell installed on their laptops will also be able to access mapped drives and software off of the network.  While students will have the same access they have in their residence halls, they will not have access to mapped drives or software off of the network (University owned).  The map below indicates those areas currently supported by wireless connectivity.  The wireless connections can be identified by the green dots.

The computer or device used to access our wireless connections must have the proper hardware (Wireless Network Card).  Many of these products are available in the University Bookstore.  Contact them at x36085 (on-campus) or 410-543-6085 (off-campus) for more information and/or pricing.
