Dr. Laurie Andes

Dr. Laurie Andes is a professor in the Teacher Education Department at Salisbury University. She holds a B.S. in Elementary Education from East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania, an M.Ed. as a Reading Specialist from Loyola College in Maryland, and an Ed.D. in Education Policy, Planning and Administration from the University of Maryland.

Dr. Andes taught first, fourth and fifth grades for sixteen years in Harford County Public Schools in Maryland. Arriving at Salisbury University in 1996, she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy, language arts, literacy research, and educational administration. She also served in various administrative roles while at Salisbury University. These include the positions of Professional Development School Coordinator (three years), Elementary Education Program Director (six years), and Chair of the Teacher Education Department (three years.) Additionally, she served as director of the Academy for Leadership in Education and continues to participate in this organization as a presenter on an annual basis.

Dr. Andes has published in The International Journal of the Book, The Reading Teacher, The Virginia Reading Association, The School Administrator, the International Association of Linguistics and Behavioral Sciences, and the Keystone State Reading Association. She is interested in topics related to literacy and technology, literacy history, language arts, and school leadership.

As a result of Dr. Andes’s work with Professional Development Schools, the Seidel School of Education was awarded the Maryland Association of Teacher Educators, K-16 Partnerships Award, for outstanding partnerships with local public school systems. Dr. Andes has taught courses in area schools, and is currently engaged in research involving struggling readers and digital applications in the May Literacy Center, at Salisbury University.

Dr. Andes lives in Berlin, MD with her husband, Dr. Jon Andes, Professor of Practice in the Department of Education Specialties, and has two grown children, Caroline and Peter. She enjoys cycling, painting, and playing piano and bagpipes.
