Dr. Susan Cooledge
Dr. Susan Cooledge obtained her Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition & Teaching from the University of Arizona. She is currently a faculty member at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Her expertise is in French and ESL--she served as a research assistant to the well known second language researcher: Muriel Saville-Troike. Dr. Cooledge's research expertise includes: test designing, language program coordinating, and teacher supervision. She is a fluent speaker of French (which some of you will love), and has designed study abroad programs in Belgium and France. Her professional development interests include reading comprehension, vocabulary development, discourse analysis, study abroad and assessment in particular: Second Language Reading in Hypertext Environments.
Dr. Elizabeth Curtin
Dr. Curtin obtained her doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University, her M. A. from the University of Virginia, and her B.A. from the University of Toronto. She is currently an Associate Professor of English at Salisbury University and is also currently serving as the chair of the English Department at Salisbury University. Dr. Curtin has served as the Director of the Maryland Writing Project and the Director for the Writing across the Curriculum Program at Salisbury University. One additional fact that you will all admire is that Dr. Curtin taught at several high schools in Pennsylvania and in Virginia during the course of her career, and brings this invaluable experience into her teaching. Dr. Wavie Gibson
The instructor for the next course is Dr. Wavie Gibson. He obtained his doctorate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and recently retired as a faculty member here at Salisbury University. Among his vast areas of expertise: he worked for four years with the Maryland Institute on Migrant Education, was a High school teacher of Spanish in Delaware, (you are all going to appreciate this), and also served on the faculty of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Dr. Gibson is a specialist in grammar/rhetoric and language/culture as well as a scholar of African American literature and of course, English grammar! He is currently working on several books in these areas. I'll leave you to ask any other questions.
Dr. Laura Marasco
Dr. Laura Marasco was born into an Italian/Native American heritage family, and has been professionally involved with multicultural language and literacy for over 30 years, working in the fields of migrant, bilingual and ESOL education with an emphasis on critical thinking and social justice. Before coming to Salisbury University she was a Colorado Director of Bilingual education, received a Fulbright to study conflict resolution in Nicaragua and was named honorable mention Colorado Teacher of the Year. Originally trained as a secondary Spanish teacher at Hanover, she went on to add graduate certifications in bilingual-bicultural elementary education and Holocaust studies, a Masters in History with a Latin American concentration at Indiana University, additional graduate work in Latin American politics and geography from Syracuse University and a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Innovation with a an emphasis on culture and learning from University of Colorado. She has teaching experience from pre-k through graduate education. Currently, at Salisbury University, she teaches social studies methods at the undergraduate and graduate levels, Literacy and Diversity at the graduate level in the REED program, and serves as the Director of Masters in Education programs. Her greatest accomplishment, however, is to get her four grown children, their partners and eight grandchildren around her dining room table at least once a year where they renew their commitment to their multicultural and linguistic heritage and the importance of modeling a peaceful, accepting way to be in the world.
Dr. Clement Okafor
Dr. Clement Okafor obtained his doctorate from Harvard University. A fluent speaker of four different languages, Dr. Okafor is a living example of what it means to be bilingual, and what the advantages of being multilingual in the world today are. Currently on the faculty at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, Dr. Okafor's teaching experience spans both national and international academic arenas. He has taught at Indiana University, New York University, the University of Nigeria, The University of Ibadan (one of the premier universities in Africa), and the University of Zambia. Dr. Okafor is a published scholar in the specific area of African literature, and a veteran administrator of programs of "new/ postcolonial Englishes." I will leave you to ask him any questions.
Dr. John Wolinski
Dr. John Wolinski has an M.A. in Reading Education from Rowan University and a Ph.D. in Reading and Language Arts from Florida State University. Dr. John Wolinski is Professor Emeritus, Department of Teacher Education, at Salisbury University. He has served as an Assistant Dean in the School of Education and Professional Studies at Salisbury University, and was a former classroom teacher in New Jersey and a Specialist in Reading with the Florida Department of Education. Dr. Wolinski's presentations are characterized by practical applications of research and observation. He is the co-author of the 1990 McGraw-Hill Spelling series for grades 1-8. Dr. Wolinski has completed a thorough meta-analysis of the National Reading Panel Report and is currently reviewing the research that supports and informs appropriately “balanced” classroom literacy practices. Dr. Wolinski was honored with the 2003 Salisbury University Alumni Association’s Faculty Appreciation Award for the Seidel School, presented at the fall 2003 Convocation Ceremony.
