Water Conservation

In 2008, a campus wide project was initiated to improve energy efficiency and conserve water. The contract for the project was awarded to PEPCO Energy Services and included energy efficiency projects such as lighting upgrades, building envelope sealing, HVAC equipment upFaucet running.grades. The water conservation measures included installation of low-flow aerators in sinks, showers and low-flush rate toilets. The upgrades were estimated to reduce the annual water consumption rate by at least 11 million gallons.

In 2011, a new commercial dishwashing system was installed which uses 31.7 gallons of hot water and 39.6 gallons of cold water per hour of operation, representing a significant reduction in water use and up to 50% less detergent than other systems on the market.

Irrigation of landscaping has been reduced significantly over the years and is used only when necessary to maintain the health of the plants. In addition, a rainwater collection cistern was installed for Nanticoke residence hall and is used to provide landscaping irrigation in that area.


The University has installed water bottle filling stations in most buildings on campus.  These stations save materials and energy, as well as reduce waste and conserve water.
