Green Buildings
Leadership
in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized
green building certification system with third-party verification that a
building was designed and built with consideration given to energy savings,
water efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, stewardship of resources
and improved indoor environmental quality.
LEED was developed by the
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is intended to provide building
owners and operators with a framework for implementing green building design,
construction, and
operation features (PDF) in new building construction and building
renovation projects.
 Point System
There are 100 possible base points plus an additional 6 points for
"Innovation in Design" and 4 points for "Regional Priority". Buildings can
qualify for four levels of certification:
- Certified: 40 - 49 points
- Silver: 50 - 59 points
- Gold: 60 - 79 points
- Platinum: 80 points and above
Points are distributed across major credit categories such as Sustainable
Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and
Indoor Environmental Quality. Pre-requisites in each category receive no points
and are mandatory for all projects.
In 2009, Salisbury University earned a Silver designation for its first LEED
certification for the Teacher Education and Technology Center (TETC), opened in
2008. The TETC was the first LEED certified commercial building on the Eastern
Shore. Since 2009, Salisbury University has a policy of LEED Silver as the
minimum for
new construction and major renovation projects (PDF).
In 2011, SU received its first LEED Gold certification, for the renovation of
Pocomoke Hall. That same year, Sea Gull Square received LEED Silver
certification
