African American History Month Celebration

February 5 African American History Month Keynote Address:  Dr. Cherry Gooden, Associate Professor & Chair, Department of Curriculum & Instruction, College of Education, Texas Southern University.  Wicomico Room, 7pm
February 11

 “The Negro Zone" which will focus on stereotypes and how they are impacted upon the African American community.  This movie was produced by Atif Lanier, a student at Temple University.  Wicomico Room, 8:00pm.  Sponsored by Union of African American Students.

February 13 Annual Soul Food Dinner featuring Bernard Sweetney Jazz Quartet. Commons Bistro 5p - 7pm
February 13 James A. Cameron presents the living history program “America’s Black Patriot” (Immediately following Soul Food Dinner) In this program, Cameron portrays Revolutionary War-era African-American John Rollison, a free African-American who manages to acquire wealth and notability in Colonial Williamsburg, VA, where “free” doesn’t necessarily mean “equal”.  Guerrieri University Center, Wicomico Room 7:30pm
February 22 Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre presents the Ailey II Dance Company.  Its programs illustrate aspects of the African-American heritage and other cultures to unite people of different races, ages and background.  The company “can be counted on to deliver high-energy dancing made even more electric by the push of youthful ambition,” says The New York Times.  Admission is free and the public is invited.  Tickets are required and may be picked up in advance at the Information Desk of the Guerrieri University Center with a limit of 2 per person.  Holloway Hall Auditorium, 7 p.m.

Steve Birdene: “Affirmations in Action:  Diversity Made Simple”  A nationally known speaker and the author of A Common Sense Approach to Retaining Students of Color, Birdine has been named one of Ebony magazines “100+ Most Influential Blacks in the United States”.   Montgomery Room-Commons Building, 7pm
