Seek Counseling

How can counseling services help someone like me?

You do not have to be confronting overwhelming difficulties in order to benefit from a visit to Student Counseling Services.  It is a common misconception to think that only seriously ill or "crazy" people need counseling help.

Studies show that over eighty percent of people can benefit from counseling at some time in their lives. Therefore, it is normal to need counseling when special concerns or difficult feelings arise. Most people have a problem with anxiety, depression, stress, relationships, etc., at some point.

Understanding a situation before it reaches the crisis stage can make a big difference. We encourage you to come in, even if you are not sure that counseling is what you need. With a counselor's help, you can discuss alternatives and decide the best way to proceed. For many students, dealing effectively with emotional and social issues increases their success with academic work. Student Counseling Services is a place for help with any psychological or emotional problem or need.

Don't put off seeking counseling or therapy. If you are considering it, this is an indication that you probably could benefit from the experience.

When we plant a rose seed in the earth, we notice that it is small, but we do not criticize it as "rootless and stemless". We treat it as a seed. When it first shoots up out of the earth, we don't condemn it as immature and underdeveloped; nor do we criticize the buds for not being open when they appear. We stand in wonder at the process taking place and give the plant the care it needs at each stage of its development. The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it dies. Within it, at all times, it contains its whole process of change; yet at each state, at each moment, it is perfectly all right as it is.
