Martha Mancuso

Instrument: Cello
Years with SSO: 5

What is your role in the orchestra (chair/principle)?

Principal cellist.

What keeps you coming back to the SSO each year?

I keep coming back each year to play more great music with good friends.

What does it take to prepare for a performance?

Practicing, listening to recordings, and of course, rehearsing with the orchestra.

Do you have a memory of a favorite performance with the SSO?

My favorite performance with the SSO was the winter concert of 2009 when we played Brahms’ Violin Concerto.

Do you play with any groups other than the SSO?

I play chamber music with several groups for weddings, other occasions, and sometimes just for fun.

How long have you been playing your instrument?

I started playing piano in first grade and switched to cello in fifth grade.

Did you study music? Where and when?

Peabody Conservatory ’83.

Who are your musical influences?

My parents’ love of classical music was my earliest influence. All of my private cello instructors were a huge influence especially Mihaly Virizlay, my teacher at Peabody. Now I find attending live performances very inspiring.

What CD is in your car stereo (or on your iPod) right now?

Beethoven Symphony No. 3.

What is your favorite style of music to play? To listen to?

I enjoy many different styles.

What is your favorite piece of music? Who is your favorite composer/songwriter?

J.S. Bach’s Chaconne from Partita in D minor for solo violin.

If you had to play a different instrument, which one would you choose? Why?

It would be nice to play something smaller and easier to carry around.

What do you do for a living?

I teach Adult Education at WorWic Community College.

Do you have any hobbies other than music?

I’d like to have time for reading, needlework and sailing with my husband.

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

I also teach lessons with the Music School of Delaware, have private cello students and enjoy being involved with the Salisbury Youth Orchestra.
