Phi Alpha Honor Society

SOCIAL WORK DEPARTMENT RECOGNITION CEREMONY will be held on Friday evening, December 12th at 5:00 p.m. in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall and will include the following:

Phi Alpha  Honor Society Induction -  sponsored by the Social Work Department Phi Alpha Honor Society – this event is for members of the Phi Alpha Honor Society and their families to honor students who have achieved the GPA and who meet the criteria for induction into the honor society. Refreshments following. 

MSW Hooding Ceremony - sponsored by the Social Work Department, this event includes speakers from the Seidel School and the Social Work professional community.  This is a special opportunity to celebrate your achievement with your families, professors, instructors and colleagues!  This makes for a great photo opportunity.  Please plan to attend this smaller event the evening prior to the larger graduation the next morning. Refreshments following this celebratory event.

Applications will be accepted in the spring for the May 2015 induction ceremony.  Please look for an email announcement to arrive in your campus email account. 

Undergraduate (BASW) Eligibility

An undergraduate student is eligible for active membership when he or she has:

  • Declared Social Work as their major

  • Achieved an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher
  • Achieved a 3.25 GPA in Social Work courses
  • Completed nine (9) credit hours of Social Work courses prior to the fall 2014 semester
  • All students attending one of our campuses, including satellite campuses, may apply if they are working toward an undergraduate degree in Social Work from Salisbury University
  • Members are required to attend two (2) meetings and participate in two (2) activities during the academic year

Application Process:

Applications are due in the Social Work Office by Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Dues of $40 (check only, made out to Salisbury University) along with a copy of your transcript (available on Gullnet or at the Registrar's Office) must be turned in with your application. The $40 dues cover the cost of your membership and honor cord. If your application is NOT accepted, your check will be returned.

Turn in your signed BASW application form, transcript, and $40 check between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday to Susan Mareski, Administrative Assistant. Ms. Mareski will provide you with a receipt.  Off-campus students can submit their application, transcript and payment via U.S. Mail to SOWK Program-Phi Alpha, 1101 Camden Ave., Salisbury, MD 21801.

Graduate (MSW) Eligibility

A Master of Social Work student is eligible for active membership when he or she has:

  • Been admitted into the Master of Social Work program
  • Achieved an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.70
  • Completed 12 credit hours of master level Social Work courses prior to the fall 2014 semester
  • All students attending one of our campuses, including satellite campuses, may apply if they are working toward a graduate degree in Social Work from Salisbury University
  • Members are required to attend two (2) meetings and participate in two (2) activities during the academic year
