Drs. Pope & Wagner Present to Middle States on Holocaust Education
In February 2016, Drs. Sandy Pope and Diana Wagner presented Holocaust education workshop for the Middle States Council for Social Studies (MCSS) in Annapolis, MD. The workshop explored themes and materials related to social justice and genocide education. Dr. Pope first led an interactive activity that highlighted the mechanisms of grouping and isolation. Then participants used primary source photographs from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to develop thematic pictorial narratives. Dr. Wagner then taught participants the writing strategy of “Jamming on a Text,” using a passage from Simon Wiesenthal’s book The Sunflower. Teachers from Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania attended the conference.
