Reports:
1. Elementary Education Program: Debra Thatcher reported on the proposed revision of the elementary education program (see attached memo of February 1, 1999). The proposal is expected to be reviewed by the University Curriculum Committee in October 1999 and implemented in Fall 2000. David Rieck inquired about the elementary education program size and implications for number of faculty in departments. There are approximately 660 elementary education majors on campus. Polly Stewart inquired about disseminating program revisions to community college students. Articulation agreements will inform community colleges of approved program changes. D. Thatcher noted the inclusion of a minor or thematic cluster to provide candidates with in-depth study. In response to C. Chappell=s inquiry about the 200-level numbering of the proposed Child and Adolescent Development course, D. Thatcher responded this level would permit community colleges to offer the course. A. White asked if EDUC 467 could be used as the Special Needs course. Since it is an undergraduate-graduate swing course, it can not. The proposed Special Needs course would focus on inclusion and be integrated with field experiences. As for the proposed minor / thematic cluster, A. White pointed out 15 credits were needed for ELED requirements. D. Thatcher commented on the way some course proposals fit in to the proposed General Education initiatives, e.g., the interdisciplinary IDIS 280 Introduction to Creative Arts course.
2. Secondary / K-12 Programs: J. Bing reported the Secondary Education / K-12 committee recommended EDUC 338 Speech in the Secondary School be dropped, and EDUC 339 Secondary / K-12 Methods Visit be added as a new course. The committee also approved a set of Constitution and Bylaws.
3. MAT Program: Joel Jenne has received 25 applicants for 10 MAT openings for the next year=s cohort group. The program has sufficient faculty to offer only one cohort group. The current cohort will take comprehensive exams on Saturday, February 6.
4. School Psychometry Program: Charisse Chappell observed the NASP folio rejoinder has been received. While the program is not in compliance with NASP standards, the rejoinder reflected better grades than on the folio. A committee is developing curriculum for a certificate in advanced study for the school psychology program. Lack of sufficient school psychology faculty is an issue.
5. Master of Education Program: Nancy Michelson reported that the proposed state mandates in reading will have an impact on the need for reading specialists in schools. In response to these needs, an M.Ed in Reading proposal is being developed.
6. Master of Education School Administration Program: Ellen Whitford reported for Ken Milner on the School Administration program. The program has substantially increased the number of internship hours in one semester.
