Admission: 1st degree BS

Salisbury University Department of Nursing
Admissions Statement—1st Bachelor’s Degree Students

Students with an interest in nursing should declare nursing as their major upon application to the University.  Enrollment in the nursing major is a two-step admission process—admission to the University with a separate approval/admission process to begin the upper division nursing courses.  Admission to the University does not guarantee acceptance to begin the upper division nursing courses.  Students are eligible to begin the upper-division required nursing courses upon successful completion of the admission requirements and approval by the Nursing Department Student Policies Committee. Decisions regarding acceptance to begin the upper division nursing courses occur during the spring semester prior to the start of fall classes, usually by March 15. Due to course sequencing students must begin the upper division nursing courses in the fall semester only. The admission requirements and priorities are listed below..

Admissions Procedure:

All students, including those currently enrolled at SU as well as transfer students are considered on a competitive and space-available basis.  Decisions regarding acceptance to begin the upper division nursing courses are made according to the cumulative GPA from all institutions attended and with consideration of the overall academic record and test scores. To be considered for admission to the upper division nursing courses, current and prospective students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be admitted to Salisbury University
  • Send all transcripts from all previous academic institutions attended to the Admissions Office to arrive well before Feb 15th.
  • Prior to the fall semester in which students plan to begin the upper division coursework, successfully complete, or have a plan to complete, all nursing pre-requisite coursework with no more than one grade lower than a C and no more than one repeated course (BIOL 334 must be completed with a C or better). The nursing pre-requisite courses include: BIOL 211, BIOL 215, BIOL 216, BIOL 217,  BIOL 334, CHEM 121, CHEM 122, and PSYC 300.
  • Transfer students taking their first SU courses in the Spring ’08 semester or later and requesting to enroll in Nursing courses for Fall ’08 or later must register for, schedule, and complete the Admission Assessment Exam (A2) (PDF) at a Prometrics testing center between Nov 1st and Feb. 15th.  The link below will connect the student applicant to instructions on how to register with Evolve Reach and then schedule this exam with a local Prometrics testing center.  The cost is currently $85.00.  All freshman students admitted for Fall ’08 and after will be required to take this exam during their sophomore year prior to their Request to Enroll in nursing courses for their junior year.  This nationally standardized pre-nursing admission exam will be administered via a computer at a secure testing center and will cover English grammar, vocabulary, reading ability, math, chemistry, and A&P.  Results will be reported to Salisbury University’s Department of Nursing’s Student Policies Committee and will be one criterion used in admissions decisions.  Applicants who were SU students already taking courses at SU in the Fall ’07 or before, already licensed as RNs, 2nd degree program students, or graduate students do not have to complete this exam.

  • Submit the Request to Enroll form to the nursing department by February 15th indicating their interest in beginning the upper division nursing courses in the fall semester. The Request to Enroll form is available from the Nursing Department website, or can be obtained from the Department Secretary (Devilbiss Hall 235).
