About Us

The Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts is the largest and most diverse of Salisbury University’s four endowed schools.

Named in 1990, the Fulton School offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the fine arts, humanities and social sciences.  In addition to strengths in the traditional academic disciplines, the Fulton School offers a number of majors and minors in interdisciplinary and applied fields.

As the liberal arts education remains the hallmark of undergraduate higher education in the United States, widely regarded as the world’s best, the Fulton School plays a vital role in the academic experience of every Salisbury University student.


Fulton School courses and programs aim to fulfill the mission of Salisbury University by:

  • Empowering students with knowledge and skills vital to life long professional success and personal growth;
  • Maintaining a student-centered academic environment through modest class sizes and conscientious mentoring;
  • Emphasizing in each program the importance of effective research, analysis and communications skills vital to success both within the discipline and in a knowledge-based economy's work force; and
  • Fostering understanding and appreciation of the diversity of the world's cultures and traditions, also as reflected in our own society, through our community, curriculum, cultural programming and international education.

Fulton School faculty endeavors include:

  • Literature/Film Quartely, a peer-reviewed journal with a primary focus on literary adaptation in film, housed at Salisbury University since its establishment in 1973;
  • The International Social Science Review, the peer-reviewed journal of the Pi Gamma Mu honors society, featuring articles and reviews in economics, history, political science, sociology and related fields;
  • The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture, specializing in local and regional history, archeology and folklore;
  • Annual conference on American Women of Color;
  • The Maryland Summer Center for the Arts program for talented and gifted middle and high school students; and
  • Imaging and Remote Sensing Center, which provides computer-assisted mapmaking for local, state and federal planning agencies.

The University Galleries in Fulton Hall and Guerrieri University Center, and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University, are affiliated with the Fulton School.

Interdisciplinary Studies

In addition to discipline-based programs of study, the Fulton School of Liberal Arts provides interdisciplinary programming through a range of innovative curricula demonstrating how intellectual curiosity crosses boundaries between disciplines and unique programs that enable students to adapt the rich heritage of liberal arts to current and individual needs.

In the liberal arts tradition and to facilitate the integration of curriculum, the University offers courses in interdisciplinary studies. These courses, described in the Courses section of the undergraduate catalogue under Interdisciplinary Studies, are taught by a variety of departments and may be used, upon approval of advisors, within many of the programs of the University.

Career-related tracks, such as journalism and graphic design, as well as supervised community-service internships with museums, government agencies and other organizations, enable students to apply liberal education in actual practice.
