RESNET Network Help Guide

This paper will contain some helpful hints and suggestions on how to get connected to the network if you’re having an issue.  Please note you can also visit Salisbury websites before logging in, such as our website http://resnet.salisbury.edu .  Please take a good look at this guide…if you are still having an issue after reading this, call the Helpdesk at 410-677-5454 (TE 113a).

General Information – MUST READ

·         To Login to the network, you MUST use your Groupwise (email) login and password.  DO NOT USE YOUR GULLNET LOGIN/PASSWORD!

·         There is currently no University provided wireless in the residence halls…you must connect via an Ethernet cable (it has 8 gold pins on the plug/connector).

·         We DO NOT support Hubs/Switches/Routers (wired or wireless).  If you are trying to connect through one of these devices, that is most likely the source of your problem.  You need to connect directly from the jack in the wall to your computer.

·         We suggest that you DISABLE your wireless while you are in the residence halls.  Many students will still try to run their own wireless and due to the way many operating systems work, if your computer finds wireless it will make it the priority connection and you will have trouble getting on the network.

·         If you get no web pages at all, try using your roommates Ethernet cable (if they are on the network when they use it) in YOUR port.  If you work then, your Ethernet cable is most likely bad.  If you’re still not working, try using your roommates Ethernet port and cable.  If you’re working, then it is probably a jack issue.  For cable issues, you should go buy another Ethernet cable.  For a jack issue, call the helpdesk to report the issue at 410-677-5454.

·         If you keep getting the login screen reappearing, confirm the Nevis agent is installed (you should see a white square with an orange flower near the top of your screen).  If it’s not there, you need to make sure java is installed (unless you’re using internet explorer, which uses ActiveX) and that you have ACCEPTED the Nevis agent install.  If the agent is loaded and you’re still at the login screen, you may need to reset your password at http://mypassword.salisbury.edu.  If you cannot visit that site on your computer, try to use a friend’s computer or visit the Helpdesk in the new TE building, room 113A.

·         If you need antivirus/antispyware software, you can download it from http://www.salisbury.edu/resnet/antivirus.html .  Make sure that you uninstall any existing antivirus product you may have.  The login/password for this software is your Groupwise (email) login/password.

Windows XP/Vista Users

·         To login to our network, you need to be using either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.  After you get logged in, you can use whatever browser you want to use.

·         You will need to ACCEPT the Nevis agent install to login.  You will know the Nevis agent is loaded when you see a white square with an orange flower near your clock.  NOTE:  On some vista machines, this square is initially black.

·         VISTA:  Disable User Account Control.  This is one of the main reasons why you cannot get past the login page.  Either use the “TweakUAC” application that’s linked on the login page OR click START, CONTROL PANEL…in the top right search box type “UAC” and you will see 1 entry…”Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.”  Click that and make sure the box is unchecked, and then reboot and try to login again…Make sure you ACCEPT the agent install.

Mac OSX Users

·         To login to our network, you need to be using Safari, Mozilla Firefox or Opera.  YOU MUST HAVE JAVA INSTALLED AND ENABLED!!!!!
