Windows (XP/Vista/7)

Microsoft Security Essentials is the current recommended Antivirus and Antispyware solution for windows-based PCs on RESNET.  It is FREE software.  A description from Microsoft's Security Essentials Website is below:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times."

Installation Instructions for Microsoft Security Essentials

1.  Before you install Microsoft Security Essentials, please make sure you have removed other Antivirus software on your computer (Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, PC Cillin are some examples).  In particular, McAfee Enterprise must be removed, which is the software we have offered to RESNET students in the past.

2.  If possible, download and install the latest version of security essentials from Microsoft @ http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

3.  If you are on RESNET and unable to get out to the internet, you can download a recent version (may not be the latest) of Microsoft Security Essentials near the bottom of this page.

Mac OS-X

ClamXav is the current recommended Antivirus and Antispyware solution for Mac-based PCs on RESNET.  It is FREE software.  A description from the ClamXav:  ClamXav is a free virus checker for Mac OS X. It uses the tried, tested and very popular ClamAV open source antivirus engine as a back end.

Installation Instructions for ClamXav

1.  Remove any existing antivirus that you have on MAC.  McAfee Virex is one that you may have gotten in the past, as we used to offer it for Mac users.

2.  Install the latest BETA (ClamXav beta software seems to be just as stable as the STABLE versions, but has more features) directly from the ClamXav beta website @ http://www.clamxav.com/index.php?page=v2beta

3.  If you are on RESNET and unable to get out to the internet, you can download a recent version (may not be the latest) of ClamXav Beta near the bottom of this page.
