Credit by Examination

Salisbury University (SU) will apply a maximum of 60 semester hours of course work toward the completion of a Baccalaureate degree for acceptable credit by examination scores using the following testing methods:

Advanced Placement Program (AP) (Fall 2008)

Students who have completed Advanced Placement (AP) course work as part of their high school experience and have taken the corresponding AP examination may be entitled to advanced standing credit at Salisbury University (SU).

Students receiving scores of three (3), four (4), or five (5) on the AP examination are awarded credit for course work at SU as detailed in the following table.   The Admission's office must receive an official score report from the College Board Advanced Placement Program to award credits. To request that scores be sent to SU:

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Fees: Can be paid by check, credit card or money order.
Checks and money orders for the CLEP fee of $72.00 should be made payable to CLEP. Checks and money orders for the SU fee of $20.00 should be made payable to Salisbury University for a total of $92.00. There is an additional $10.00 fee for any English Essay Exam taken that will be paid to the English Department.

Salisbury University (SU) awards advanced standing credit to students who have received acceptable scores on College Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations provided more advanced or similar course work has not been previously completed.

Students who score at or above the minimum scores established by the University on General Examinations, and at or above the American Council on Education (ACE) recommended minimums on Subject Examinations are awarded credit for course work at SU as detailed in the following table. A maximum of 24 hours of CLEP General Examination credit can be applied to a Baccalaureate degree. CLEP Subject Examinations cannot be used to satisfy course work requirements within the Medical Technology, Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy programs unless written approval is obtained from the department chair prior to testing. The Registrar's office must receive an official score report from the College Board College Level Examination Program to award credits.

* Biology majors receive 4 credits of lower-level Biology course work (BIOL ELE) that can be used toward satisfying the electives component of the major.

***ENGL CLEP Exam - A student must pass a National CLEP composition or literature exam with a 67 or better to receive credits for an English elective. To be eligible to receive credit for ENGL 101, 102, or an English literature course, the student must also write an exam essay given by the English department. A $10 fee is required to take the essay portion of the exam, payable by check made out to Salisbury University. This essay will be given twice a semester: during the first week of classes and on the Tuesday before Program Planning begins. If the student passes the exam, the credits will be posted to the transcript in the following semester. A student may not receive credit in the same semester in which the exam is taken. International Baccalaureate Program (IB)

Students who earn an IB Certificate will be awarded 3 – 8 semester hours of credit for each Higher Level IB exam completed with a score of 4 or above. 

Students who earn an IB Diploma will be awarded 3 – 8 semester hours of credit, up to 30 credits, for scores of 4 or above on both the higher level and the standard level IB exams.

Students are awarded credit for courses at SU as detailed in the following table. Official IB examination results must be sent directly from IB to the SU Admissions Office.
