Dear New Faculty Member:

Welcome to the Salisbury University campus community. We are pleased and honored that you have chosen to join us at an exciting time in our institution’s history. While the 92-year-old campus is relatively young by academic standards, we have a well-established regional and national reputation, with a growing international presence for our strong academic and student-centered programs. The new ideas, varied backgrounds and diverse viewpoints you bring to SU will contribute to our continued progress as A Maryland University of National Distinction.

We have several exciting developments this academic year, including our spectacular new Guerrieri Academic Commons, which houses the library and other vital services. Students and faculty have embraced this center of learning and have made it a vital part of the University experience. Opened just last year, this remarkable, modern facility is emblematic of the growth and promise of our campus. With a carillon installed in the tower of the building this summer, the University will peal the bells in celebration of our successes. The Honors College just graduated its largest class and is welcoming a record-setting number to its incoming cohort. Last year, the University boasted three student Fulbright award recipients and we continue to offer life-changing opportunities through our Nationally Competitive Fellowships Office, research and other active learning programs. SU is a vibrant, intellectually charged learning community that will provide you many opportunities for professional development and success.

One of the most important characteristics of students and faculty members is their eagerness to embrace all sorts of information from multiple sources. Your next several days will call upon those skills. The New Faculty Orientation Committee has put together a comprehensive program to help you successfully navigate your first year at SU. It will orient you to sources of information, what to expect, who does what and where to find a helpful colleague. There are many wonderful opportunities on the Lower Eastern Shore beyond the campus, and we hope you’ll come to enjoy them as much as we do.

We are genuinely glad you are here and hope you will find the personal and professional satisfaction that comes from working with engaged students and supportive colleagues. Ours is a friendly campus, with many opportunities to interact informally. SU also has been named among the nation’s 50 most beautiful autumn campuses, providing a pleasant atmosphere for teaching, research and service. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. Welcome to Salisbury University!

Sincerely,

Janet Dudley-Eshbach
