Recruitment

The Salisbury University Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency which provides police services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to the campus community. Our agency provides a multitude of services to the SU community to include proactive enforcement and community policing strategies, investigation of criminal and traffic offenses, apprehension of offenders, parking enforcement and security for special events. The department's main objective is to provide professional police services, while working with the community to reduce criminal opportunity and heighten the safety of our campus and its members through crime prevention awareness.

The Salisbury University Police Department is also responsible for the Emergency Preparedness Plan at SU. This plan keeps the campus community informed and updated on any major emergencies or threats that occur on or around Salisbury University. The plan provides instruction to the campus community on how to respond to those major emergencies.

Full-time Opportunities

Commissioned Police Officers (Full-time) Our police officers are State certified in accordance with Article 41, Section 4-201 of the Annotated Code of Maryland and have all the same powers and authority as any other sworn police officer in Maryland; each officer is empowered by State law to make arrests, investigate crimes, and carry firearms. Furthermore, the University Police Department is the primary agency responsible for policing property owned, operated, leased by, or under the control of Salisbury University.

Tasks Include:

  • Engaging in Community Policing techniques with campus members;
  • Providing thorough criminal and traffic investigations;
  • Internal and external collaboration with community stakeholders; and
  • Enhancing the professionalism of officers through training and education.
Upon employment, individuals must have completed or be eligible to complete entrance level at an approved police academy and training for certification with the Maryland Police Training Commission (MPTC).

Minimum Requirements:

  • United States Citizen;
  • 21 years of age or older;
  • High school graduate or have successfully completed the G.E.D. examination;
  • Possess a valid Driver’s license;
  • Pass a physical & psychological examination;
  • Pass a polygraph examination and undergo a complete background investigation.

Non-Commissioned Officers (Full-time) A Security Guard performs high visibility patrol to enhance campus security.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Stationed or roaming patrol of campus
  • Reporting information to SU Police regarding suspicious or criminal activity
  • Provides customer service
  • Monitor video surveillance system
  • Attends to security needs of the campus community.
  • Provides security during assignments at SU special and sporting events
  • Climbing stairs, and walking and standing for long periods of time
Administrative (Full-time) Administrative roles at the Salisbury University Police department are in‐office positions supporting commissioned supervisory staff and department operations.

Job duties and responsibilities:

  • Billing, clerical duties, crime report release, management and statistics, accreditation
  • maintenance, and other administrative assignments
  • Strong communication, computer and organizational skills, time management, and the ability to work independently or with a team

Full-time And Student Opportunities

Communications (Students/Full-time) A Police Communications Operator facilitates communication between Salisbury University police personnel, other police and emergency agencies, and the SU community.

Tasked with:

  • Providing professional customer service
  • Operating two-way radios, and answering telephones, and assisting walk-ins
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Monitoring the University’s Central Alarm systems and recording data through the Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD)
  • Monitoring campus wide security camera surveillance system
  • Utilizing the national and state maintained information databases such as NCIC, NLETS, and METERS in addition to other resource systems.
Parking-Services (Students/Full-time) Parking Services role at the Salisbury University Police department are in-office positions.

Duties include:

  • Answering phones;
  • Sell parking permits;
  • Filing, data entry, and processing parking tickets;
  • Provide professional customer service

Student Opportunities

Student Patrol (Students Only) Student Patrol works in direct correlation with the University Police officers and Security Guards to provide detailed information about security concerns around campus. They maintain high visibility in and around academic buildings and residence halls.

Duties include:

  • Patrol Salisbury University owned property;
  • Secure academic buildings;
  • Provide escorts to students after dark;
  • Provide security at special events;
  • Enforce parking rules and regulations by issuing parking citations.
Student Traffic Control (Students Only) Student Traffic Controllers monitor Salisbury University owned parking lots. They provide direction to students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Salisbury University.

Duties include:

  • Stationed monitor at parking lot entrances;
  • Provides customer service;
  • Enforces parking rules and regulations by issuing parking citations;
  • Assist parking at special or athletic events.
