Arrest for Stolen Laptop (February 1, 2006)

On January 31, 2006 a non-student subject stole a laptop computer from an unlocked office in Caruthers Hall.  The office had been ransacked, but no other items were taken.  Fortunately, the subject attempted to sell the laptop computer to an alert student, who immediately notified University Police.  The subject was located and arrested by University Police.  The subject was in possession of a stolen cellular telephone and a backpack that had been left unattended in Maggs Gym.

This type of crime does occasionally occur on campus.  A suspect will walk into an unlocked/unoccupied office searching for items to steal.  Normally, when a suspect is approached by a member of the campus community, they claim to be looking for someone.

Thieves know that wallet/purses are left behind desks or in unlocked desk and file cabinet drawers.  They also know that students routinely leave backpacks, cellular phones and books unattended in certain areas.  To decrease your chance of becoming a victim, follow these crime prevention tips:

  • Lock your office even if you leave for only a minute.
  • Take your wallet/purse/backpack/cellular phone with you.
  • If available, lock your property in a locker.
  • Consider locking your items in the trunk of your vehicle.

Report suspicious persons or activity to University Police, 410-543-6222.
