Vehicle break-ins:
Between Tuesday 5/14/02, at 1:30 a.m. and Wednesday 5/15/02, at 6:55 p.m. seven vehicles were illegally entered, three vehicles incurred theft, three vehicles sustained damage, and all seven vehicles were ransacked.
One of the incidents took place in the Library lot, one incident in the Chesapeake lot, two in the St. Martin lot, and three in the Devilbiss lot. Of the seven illegally entered vehicles--four were Jeeps, two were cars and one was a pick-up truck. An analysis of the times shows that five of the seven incidents occurred between 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday and 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
University Police crime prevention tips:
- Report any suspicious person(s) in or around vehicles or the parking lots at x36222 or 410-543-6222.
- Lock your vehicles at all times.
- Do not leave handbags, wallets, purses, book bags, CD's or packages in plain sight. Take the items with you or lock them in the trunk.
- Never leave the keys in the ignition, even if you are only going to be gone for a "minute."
Book bag thefts:
Walk into the Commons area just outside the Cashier's station and you will see numerous book bags open and/or unattended. Three book bag thefts were reported between 5/15/02 and 5/16/02. Two of the book bags were recovered in the men's room minus the valuables that had been inside. The third book bag and its contents have not been recovered.
This time of year, unsecured book bags are especially vulnerable because they contain textbooks which can be sold.
University Police crime prevention tips
- Leave your book bag in your car trunk or room.
- If you must bring book bags to the Commons, use one of the lockers provided.
- Mark your name in several locations in your books to aid in recovery in the event they are stolen.
Anyone attempting to sell a stolen book at Salisbury University Bookstore's "Buy Back" will be arrested, charged and prosecuted.
If you have any information about this incident, please call the University Police immediately at 410-543-6222.
