Sea Gull Stadium Open House – April 2016
The rain stopped … the clouds parted … and the Sea Gulls soared at the opening of their new $19 million stadium on Thursday, April 7! “Today is the day we move into one of the top facilities in all of Division III athletics,” said Salisbury University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach.
As the main concourse filled with fans and WBOC’s Chopper 16 hovered overhead, the President joined coaches, student-athletes, generous benefactors and others to cut the ribbon on the four-story Sea Gull Stadium. She also honored former President Norm Crawford for the tradition of athletics excellence that began under his tenure in the 1970s.
Attendees, including alumni, area leaders, Maroon & Gold Club members and local school children, later enjoyed concession snacks and tours of all parts of the new facility. One of the best features, most agreed, was the year-round locker rooms for the football, field hockey and men’s and women’s lacrosse teams — which many of the players got to see for the first time. Built on the site of the old one-story cinderblock stadium, the building also includes an athletic training clinic, team conference room, suites, and, on the entire fourth floor, the Draper Holdings Communications Center for game broadcasts and operations.
Sea Gull Stadium is expected to boost recruiting for all of SU’s 21 varsity sports. The first game: men’s lacrosse vs. Frostburg State for the annual LAX For Leukemia Youth Day.
