Nobel Laureate F.W. de Klerk Receives First Honorary Doctorate in the U.S. and Delivers Leadership Lecture at SU

Salisbury University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach presented Nobel Laureate and former president of South Africa F.W. de Klerk with an honorary Doctor of Laws, his first from a university in the United States, prior to the Center for Conflict Resolution’s “One Person Can Make a Difference” lecture, which de Klerk delivered Monday, April 9. An appreciative audience of some 1,500 filled Maggs Center to hear de Klerk, who received several standing ovations. With Nelson Mandela, de Klerk helped lead the transition of South Africa from apartheid to a non-racist and democratic nation. The two received the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. De Klerk spoke about “Leadership and Making a Difference,” highlighting characteristics of effective leadership. His visit marked the 15th anniversary of the founding of the Center, the only one of its kind in the University System of Maryland. Last year’s “One Person Can Make a Difference” speaker was Lech Walesa, Nobel Prize winner and former president of Poland.
